Abyss Odyssey

released on Jul 15, 2014

There are only two constants in Abyss Odyssey: a great evil awaits at the bottom of the pit, and you must succeed or die. From indie Chilean developer ACE Team comes a new side-scrolling action adventure game featuring a complex fighting engine in procedurally generated levels that destines its three warriors to battle for an eternity. Enter the bold Katrien, the tortured specter Ghost Monk, and the ethereal Pincoya. Use the characters to perform combos, chaining attacks and releasing a flurry of blows in order to survive what lies beneath. Your path into the unknown may start out with three fierce warriors, but when you learn to possess your enemies, you can challenge the abyss with their skills and combat abilities. Each foe is as technically complex as the main warriors, so use all the options available to you and attempt to figure out the infinite abyss.

REALLY strange game design. this is basically a 2.5D metroidvania with.. smash brothers-like controls? kind of???????? music has its moments, the visuals are extremely muddy, the map is a tower with 4 sideways paths. I felt there wasn't much of a difference between the "easy" and "hard" rooms (which the game tells you about).

Aesthetically pleasing, but boooring.

i don't know what to say about tbis
... it has strange and interesting visuals, a very in-depth and ponderous combat system, and a bizarre story added. I like it the most.out of the ace team games I've played. I may come back to it and pick away some more

Your progress in this game is largely dependant on how much onset carpal tunnel syndrome playing smash brothers on gamecube gave you. That is to say if you know what a shield drop or a haxdash is then this game won't last you very long.

This was probably finished after a healthy and short development cycle so I don't blame them for the final product but its lack of content sticks out a lot if you dare compare it to any other rogue like this past decade, it has co op making it a very pleasant expansion to subspace emissary. It's worth the price of admission if you can get the soundtrack with it.

The OG dead cells. Extremely janky game, but really fun at times

I have a deep love for this developer, and this is the game that started that. The aesthetics are stunning, and it's just oozing style - But, that being said, the controls can be extremely frustrating to the point of taking away from the experience. I still grade it heavily on a curve because despite the frustrating beat-em-up controls, I had a fantastic time and look fondly on it to this day. I still say it's worth it to check out, just be warned it will make you work for it. Just know going in, the jank is part of the charm.
