An insult to Asteroids, an insult to the 1980s, an insult to good taste and decent hardworking people everywhere.

Although I grew up playing pong, Tetris, Space Invaders, Pac Man and other classics, Asteroids is one that I never got the chance to back then. One of the reasons I joined Backloggd was to not only get through and log my collection but to give me an overview of my gaming history of missed titles and Asteroids was a fairly glaring one.

Ok so this version isn't the 1979 original but is a modern update on the the same formula. The visuals are still very simple keeping in line with the basic line graphics of the original game. In all honesty I love what they've done here. The game is basic but crisp with great use of neon colours that change giving it a modern feel while respecting the original. The music is also of a similar vein, it feels slightly retro yet all very electronic. This feels modern but not too modern that the fundamentals have changed.

The basic gameplay is primarily the same from what I can tell. You get a little triangle ship that fires bullets in a line destroying or breaking down asteroids that come on screen. Do badly and get overwhelmed and you'll get stuck and crushed. There are also UFOs to contend with that will shoot at you. You can move forward like a tank, turn and warp if stuck to a completely random location. Recharged however adds a variety of power ups such as rapid fire, deflector shields, mega laser etc. That you can have as a temporary buff to add spice to the gameplay. One hit from anything though and it's all over. There is a reason some games are classics, I became obsessed with this game very quickly. Aiming to beat my high score, it's incredibly addictive fun and I feel the inclusion of the new power ups really adds to the original which is a sign of a good remake to me.

You can also play it in classic mode and there are 30 challenge levels to play as well. Whilst playing Challenge mode my partner asked if it was co-op, she never does this. I was kinda shocked so we played the challenges in two player and though we both died a lot with revivals it's fairly forgiving and she had a great time to my astonishment.

Honestly Asteroids Recharged just has a good vibe to it. It looks fantastic while still paying homage to its origins, it sounds great, is addictive to play and has some nice mode options. It's not going to last more than a few days to see everything but with it's low price point and good atmosphere it's totally worth it.

Fun for a short distraction. Not much interest after completing all challenges.
