Cave Noire

released on Apr 19, 1991
by Konami

Cave Noire is a roguelike video game revolving around four quests: killing monsters, freeing fairies, or collecting gold/orbs with ten difficulties each. Starting a quest creates a randomly generated dungeon where the player has one chance to reach the goal – death means a new dungeon has to be created. The difficulty determines how big the target number is, the stats the player starts with, and what monsters are encountered.

-Probably the first roguelike I've played and completed.
-Fully completed all four dungeons.
-Coin collecting dungeons were the longest and most tedious.
-Barely any story of dialogue.
-Fun gameplay where you get a deeper knowledge of the underlying mechanics the more you play.

very very cool little game. why did the west hate roguelikes so much in the 90s?

Great game for the era it came from! It gets really tough near the end. Maybe I'll come back to 100% one day, but standard completion is good enough for me right now.

Third GOTM finished for January 2024. A simple, yet well executed rogue-mechanic game that feels ahead of its time, especially when you consider this is on the Game Boy. Tight gameplay that is easy to jump in and out for small-bite sessions. It's really short, and coupled with the simplistic gameplay keeps this from feeling like a meaty experience that has to be recommended. Still, this one was quite fun and a blast to play!

Really outstanding early use of Rogue mechanics, perfectly packaged in a puzzle-like game for GB. There's not enough here to call it a must play, but for the GB this is one of the best pick up and play games.
