I want to love this. It seems right up my alley, and the ideas on display in terms of a raising sim are really great.

But man, it's so bloated with mechanics. Battle mechanics and turn-based combat aren't unheard of in raising sims, but they feel like relics even in the classic games within the genre. Here, in a modern title, it more just feels like an unnecessary inclusion, like it's getting in the way of the more fun and interesting aspects of the raising part of the game.

The game is also just kinda jank. I can manage with janky games, and I'm quite forgiving of it, especially from indie devs. But this one is really grating. The intro sequences are SO LONG, with so much dead air. You can skip the cutscenes, but then you would lose all of the important context. The tutorials are also obnoxious, taking over the whole screen and dumping info on you rather than letting you learn organically.

The story and narrative of raising sims is usually the best part of games in the genre, and blending that with lighthearted and fun mechanics is usually the way to go. Ciel Fledge instead opts for very grounded, meaty mechanics, though I question their inevitable depth. If you're looking for something less like a visual-novel, and more gamified, this might be for you! But if you just wanted a wholesome raising sim, this isn't it.
