Pretty straightforward fun arcade game. The crank controls make it feel really fun to control. Makes a great pick up and play game for the Playdate. Apparently this is a port?? Not used to that for playdate, kinda neat. Might check out what the other versions are like.

Finally someone has answered the age old question -- what if I could play Asteroids with a crank? Enter Hyper Meteor, an arcade-esque game where you steer a ship around a small arena, attempting to destroy obstacles by ramming into their vulnerable sections. It's a quick and simple game, with the only goal being to get the highest score. It reminds me a bit of Whitewater Wipeout in that way, although I think this genre personally appeals more to me. The controls feel good, it's fun to get into, but the nature of the game prevents it from really being any higher on my list. It apparently has Switch and PC ports, but I can't imagine those would be too entertaining without the novelty (and free giveaway) of the Playdate version.

a neat take on asteroids that feels great on playdate, had I not come here to review it I'd have lived blissfully with the delusion that it was a true playdate title.
You can decide for yourself if this matters to you, but it does to me.
the fact this was ported elsewhere takes a little something away from it for me...

That said, it's one of the games I find myself coming back to more than any other.

Generally okay - it's a 2D single screen shooter where you're using the crank to rotate and another button to boost, as you attempt to destroy enemies and objects around you. The only way you can do this is by hitting the thin black outlines of anything on the screen, or by using a very rare bomb to get rid of everything on screen.

I think Hyper Meteor's problem on the system is the screen size - there's not much space to play with here, and it's very easy to slide away from where you intend to go, or get caught out by meteors rotating just a little bit too fast. Or maybe I'm the problem and it's just not a style of game I gel with that well. Probably a great game if you're the kind of person the 'get into the zone', but just an average one for me.

That said, there are some bops in the soundtrack and it's sometimes worth playing through just to hear them
