Mario & Wario

released on Aug 27, 1993

Mario & Wario is a puzzle game that is compatible with the SNES Mouse. The player chooses Princess Peach, Mario or Yoshi, and Wario proceeds to drop a bucket on their head (the object changes in later levels). The player controls Wanda the fairy to guide the now-blinded character through an obstacle course, to reach Luigi waiting at the end.

Played for a little while using SNES9x on my modded Wii. I have two version available, one with the mouse controls converted into D-pad contorls, and the other with motion controls that work on the Wii. As it's a unique Mario game with some promise, I will come back to this title someday.

mario has a bucket on his head and it's up to luigi and wanda to get that bucket off his head.

You either die a Marioer or live to be a Warioer.

The only thing about the game that I have an issue with is that Wanda doesn't function as an actual cursor over the game for some reason. The mouse influences her movement, but if the camera pans and you don't move the mouse, she stays in place. Combined with questionable hit detection and many sequences where you have to be incredibly precise clicking on enemies or small blocks, it makes an otherwise really fun Lemmings-type game more frustrating than it needs to be.

The levels are really well-designed and the game is really good looking, especially for an early-ish SNES title. There's a fun risk/reward between seeking out all the Stars in a level for a 1-Up and for bonus score compared to just booking it to the end goal. I felt challenged to think about what I was doing to overcome the puzzles in each level.

Game #40

Makes Mario vs Donkey Kong look good

An alright puzzle game that has a great part of its difficulty coming from requiring you to use a comically large cursor to click on extremely small objects on the screen. It also doesn't let you replay any of the stages without resetting the game for some reason.
