i played this through the recent modern port and i think this game can be a lot of fun. when you find your golden child monster and you can really start running through the rankings with them its a great time, and the idea of using albums to create monsters is such a great concept, especially in the original versions when you could use physical cds. i like creating the bond with a monster or trying to create a really good monster that will have the ability to carry you through the rankings and training them up to do so. at a point though i feel like the grind gets tiring when your best monster gets too old or starts getting outclassed way too easily or anything like that, especially when you start to understand the game's pretty shallow training systems and how stats level up. i got one monster up to the A rank and then he got old so i just froze him and tried to move on. trying to find that next monster that will fulfill that role of reaching the last peak you set is just so devastating and even a little exhausting to the point where it feels like its never gonna happen again and its the reason why i just put the game down and i feel like im probably not gonna pick it back up again anytime soon or ever

The monster generation mechanic is such a unique idea that has been unfortunately lost (mostly) in the re-release. Still, this game remains a certified classic in my books. So in-depth for such a slept on title.

While I had fun with this at the time, and do generally like the rhythm of training One Fighter, the actual draw of the mixed media approach to a game is the part that feels the most irreplaceable in the mixture. There's so much left in mixed media game design that is just being left untouched that is a real shame, and is sadly the part that must be sacrificed to release these games on modern systems.

I was well on my way to completing the bestiary, but I lost the memory card that had the file on it. One of the worst gaming related things to happen to me. I loved this game.

They just don't make 'em like this any more. :(
