Polarium

released on Dec 02, 2004

Polarium mixes way-cool gameplay with an electronica soundtrack for the trippiest experience yet on the DS. It's the first game that would look cool at a rave. Polarium is a simple, stylish puzzle game you play entirely with the Nintendo DS touch screen and a stylus. Draw lines to flip black and white tiles and make patterns and puzzles disappear. Use the stylus to draw a stroke, flipping black and white tiles to change and match their color. Three game modes and scores of puzzles will put your puzzle-solving abilities and stylus skills to the test. Challenge a friend to a duel over a wireless connection.

Just a very boring puzzle loop. Too little difference to keep you playing

Very minimalistic puzzle game which was offered for "free" against Nintendo Points on the company's website.

Pretty barebones, but the fundamental mechanics of Polarium are solid enough. Polarium features 100 line-tracing puzzles and an endless "challenge mode" that's kind of a dud. The soundtrack is literally just the same three synthy notes repeating forever and ever, so probably turn the volume down. Ultimately the game could have used more puzzles and a more robust hint system, but I generally enjoyed working through the available puzzles.

If you like Polarium, try: The Witness

Pretty dull puzzle game. The challenge mode is just tracing pretty basic paths, only they come at you fast enough to overwhelm. Not really fun, even if you got good at it. The puzzle mode can be a bit more interesting, but there's only 100 of them and even at it's best or most complicated it's still extremely bland. The game has no depth, and no excitement either.
