I have no idea why I've never seen this game in one of those "PS2 Hidden Gems" videos.
S.L.A.I is a mech combat game with tons of customization that takes place in a VR setting filled with charming dialogue and lots of little details that make the game instantly endearing. From mechs having AI partners with different personalities, to customizing your mech's paint to being able to create playlists from the licensed mid 2000s japanese soundtrack, this is a game that oozes personality at all times. It also has an arcade mode if you either want a quick burst of gameplay or just don't want to bother with the game's progression.
Sure, at its core the gameplay is very simplistic and repetitive and the game does commit the mistake of overloading you with information all at once, but this is definitely a game worth looking into if the theme catches your eye.

this is probably one of the most innovative games of the year it came out in but the actual process of playing it feels overwhelming in how much is going on at once and how you ultimately feel helpless at combatting attacks from all around you. i can't rate this properly cuz i feel like if i decided to dedicate my life to this for a couple weeks it'd be a favorite but also i can't see myself exactly doing that...
