Super Metroid: Redux

released on Nov 16, 2021

Super Metroid Redux is an improvement hack for Super Metroid, and a continuation of Super Metroid: GBA Style. This hack aims to give Super Metroid a whole lot of improvements, being it graphical or in mechanics/gameplay, and address some of the annoyances from the original, such as increasing the speed of elevator transitions, improved weapon selection, the diagonal aiming style from Metroid: Zero Mission, and the additional option for widescreen (specific emulators only).

Despite playing a modded/enhanced version of this game, I am shocked at how well the base game holds up a little over two and a half decades later. Level design, music, pacing, and player expression all feel years ahead of it’s time. The game not only lived up to the hype for me, but cemented itself as one of the best Metroidvania games I have played.

Super Metroid is already a 10/10, and then this comes along and deals with those little issues you might nitpick. I love getting absorbed in this alien world, all alone with nothing but what I can gather. The music here is perfect for establishing that feeling. I can sit in my dark room, turn off my phone, and just feel the isolation. I had never gotten the best ending before, but one day I came close, decided to try again with the Redux patch, and I pulled it off.

It solves almost every issue with Super Metroid. If Maridia was nuked from existence, it would absolutely be the perfect video game.
