The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

released on Oct 31, 2003

The video game adaption of the acclaimed film of the same name. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King is a follow up the well received adaption of the first two films in the trilogy. The game expands on what The Two Towers accomplished, with the action and adventure sequel introducing three separate story lines from the movie: one following Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli, as The Two Towers did, another following Gandalf, and a third following Frodo and Sam, with Merry, Pippin, and Faramir serving as unlockable characters. Gameplay features were also expanded upon, including multiplayer.

This was epic. I have the fondest memories staying up late replaying the Helm's Deep battle over and over, and of getting unfairly killed in multiplayer because Gimli's killing move had a flourish that left him vulnerable too long. Good times.

A solid hack and slash adventure game, and obviously the LoTR IP is amazing. Some of the levels (especially with the hobbits) can be a slog to play, but mowing down orcs as the heroes never gets old.

It took the strength of the two towers game and learned from its mistakes and made really fun levels that you can play with many different characters. the fact you can interact with the enivorment was also really cool.

One of the better tie in titles ever made. You have a decent roster to pick from in the film, you have levels capturing the best moments. You have a fun hack and slash button masher style of gameplay that's flashy and cool to pull off long strings of combos. You have good variety in the levels and setpieces, with each character having unique abilities. Finally, you have a solid amount of bonus content with interviews, wave battles, etc.

I was mesmerized as a child the first time I played it. When I had my first job, this was one of the first things I bought! So it's special to me and I love it. It dosent do anything particularly great. But it is nostalgic and awesome the way it is.
