The Mysterious Murasame Castle

released on Apr 14, 1986

Restore peace to a land that has been overridden by evil! One stormy night in feudal Japan, a mysterious force begins to take control over Murasame Castle and its lands. Each lord in four neighboring castles has taken possession of a dark sphere of power, allowing them to summon ninja armies and monsters that wreak havoc in the villages. Takamaru, a brave and young samurai apprentice, has been sent to investigate. He must infiltrate all four castles and defeat the lords before making his way to Murasame Castle. Use sword and shuriken attacks against the swarms of enemies, and unlock the secret behind the source of evil. The game was at first released exclusively for the Famicom in Japan, but it would come to the rest of the world for the first time in 2013 as part of the 3DS virtual console, as well as for Nintendo Switch Online in 2023.

I would bet money that Tomonobu Itagaki played this game and said to himself, "One day I'll make a 3D version of this."

The combat is decent, but it does require a lot of fast reaction timing to avoid various projectiles to the point of frustration. It also suffers from repetition in the country/castle setup as well as reusing individual level tiles. Love the castle theme song though.

This game and Zelda 1 are often compared so much yet they have nothing in common beyond the top-down perspective. I don't get that.

Unhinged. TMMC takes Zelda 1's movement, combat, and even level design philosophy and adapts it into a fast-paced hack-and-slash arcade game. The flow is excellent, but the game is insanely difficult, especially concerning castles 3 and 4 (screw the white ninjas). Strangely enough, the last castle is quite easy.

No idea what I was meant to be doing but killing ninjas was fun enough.
