This game has a very funny premise, but it also wears out its welcome fairly quickly. I don't think I played it for more than three hours before feeling like I'd seen everything it had to offer. Also the aiming feels terrible, I swear I hardly ever hit an enemy except by luck. At least the ending sequence has a funny concept.

A twin-stick Zelda clone that's all about guns, magic, and gun magic. You also get to fight Joseph Stalin in space because it turns out the portal that guns magically appear from and that your people venerate like a god is just a link to a Soviet lab where they've been throwing AKs into it to see what happens.

Full Review + Trophy Review and Tips Below

Off the heels of Reverie (the delightfully cute Zelda like action-adventure that was inspired by the Maori Legend of “Maui and the Giant Fish”), Rainbite delivers Trigger Witch, a twin stick, rock ‘em sock ‘em, ultra-violent bloody adventure, fully realized in a beautiful 16-bit world that is a literal blast to play.

Over the course of 10 hours, you will obtain and upgrade a variety of weapons to use as you rampage through hundreds of cute little sprites, solve puzzles, complete dungeons, and discover the mystery behind the man in black, ending in one of the most WTF twists in video games that I have experienced in a long time.

Trigger Witch oozes charm and is one of the few games this year that I made sure to avoid skipping any dialogue. The characters are well written, funny, and you can tell that great care was taken to make sure every interaction was meaningful. The game is chock-full of humor and witty moments, including boss names that made me chuckle.

The gameplay is so much fun and never gets stale as it takes a similar 2D Zelda like approach to its level design. What makes this game unique is that you will do all this while using Glocks, Grenade Launchers, Uzi’s, Flame Launchers, Assault Rifles, and many more to navigate and annihilate all the enemies along your way.

Not only do you have a healthy variety of weapons, but I also found the reload mechanic creative as you default to your unlimited ammo Glock every time your clip empties on any other weapon. Give it some time and it will automatically reload which will allow you to swap back to it. With enemies that are both weak and immune to certain weapons, you will find yourself strategically toggling through all your weapons to take down waves of enemies. A great way to hone your newly acquired skills is to attempt the Arena Challenge, where you can battle endless waves of enemies and let me tell you, it gets intense and messy.

I want to quickly touch on the soundtrack that came in clutch to enhance the experience. I felt a rush of excitement every time an enemy encounter began and the whimsical fairytale music flawlessly transition into a bad ass rock and roll riff as you blasted the enemies to smithereens. At the end of the encounter, you're back to the peaceful music. Makes me smile just thinking of it.

With difficulty options, an assortment of extras (turn enemies from bloody messes to colorful piñatas if you want), great ways to track your progress plus all the above, you can tell this was made by a passionate team that loves and understands video games. I loved my time with Trigger Witch and am really excited to see what is next from the talented team at Rainbite.

Trophies
Difficulty: 2/10

Trophy Guide: Not Needed
Trophy List Score: 10/10

How do I determine the perfect trophy list? First and foremost, it is a trophy list that is fun and consistently rewards you throughout the game. It challenges you to try different things and respects the player’s time. It avoids multiple playthroughs, missable trophies and provides the player difficulty options so they can earn at their own pace. Trigger Witch succeeds across the board, and you can tell that love and thought was put into this list by people who appreciate trophies.

Each trophy has a charming and unique name that made me smile every time one popped and tracking them was made easy with in game progress tracking and maps that can be purchased to help guide you to missing collectibles.

This is a fun platinum to include in your collection and a shining example of how trophy lists can and should be created.

Tips:
- Just play and have fun! There is no need for a guide as nothing can be missed and the game provides a great game completion menu that shows you what you’re missing towards completing at 100% and you can purchase maps that highlight areas with missing items.
- Keep an eye out for specific area and weapons related trophies so you don’t have to revisit areas later in the game.
- Uzi on the Eyes can be a bit of a pain as you must unload a full clip without missing a single bullet hit. I recommend attempting this before upgrading the ammo and damage, also, large bosses are your best bet. If you are having a hard time, if you go next to the weapons shop in the village and go right up to the target dummy at the front. You can unload a whole clip into it and pop the trophy.
- If you think you’re missing a Flying Broom level, it may be the one located at the Arena which counts towards the trophy.

Happy Trophy Hunting!
