With this, I have finally completed every (accessible) God of War game to date. I still have my replay of 2018 coming, but I can now finally say I've finished the series.

I don't really have anything remarkable to say about these older titles. They are just simply pretty good. I didnt love them, I certainly had my problems with them. But in the end I always had a (mostly) good time with them. I think God of War III incapsulates my feelings on the series pretty well. It has some of the most badass moments, I think everyone can agree the boss fights are awesome and the game does a great job of showing spectacle with the setpeices. The combat is fun and all the weapons and magic feel good to use. The story isnt incredible but its good enough, perhaps a bit weaker than God of War II. But I dont think that really matters, after so many games of getting pulled around by the gods, ending the trilogy by slaying so many of them makes this a really fitting ending, honestly Im not sure if they could of done it better.

I do however, have some complaints. Small things first. The graphics in this remaster are really good. Game looks great. Ascension should of gone this route instead of whatever mess that game looked like. But they didnt bother to remaster any of the cutscenes, they still very much look like a PS3 game which isnt a big deal but can be jarring. Also the "parkour" feels less concise in this one. When doing the wall climbing Kratos seemed to get stuck on every bit of geometry he could, which was particularly annoying during timed sections. The grappling which was awesome in the other games also seemed to just feel less concise and the momentum needed for some jumps seemed to just not be there at all. Again, small things but they were the cause of almost all of my deaths.

My main issue with this game was, as good and bombastic the boss fights are, everything between them was pretty uninteresting. There were some cool locations and good ideas, but especially for the first half everything just felt like a bit of a retread of things that have already happened in previous games. I will say the boss fights alone make this the strongest of the older games by a small margin, but the rest of the game seemed just too familiar and did little to impress

In the end though, it does have an HD remastered sex minigame so its the best one.

Great game and epic conclusion to Kratos’ first story! I preferred the story in the second game, but gameplay was smoother than ever and combat was wickedly fun. There were some obnoxious platforming/booby trap parts near the end, but if you completed the first game, then it is nothing too terrible.
GoW original trilogy rankings
II > III > I
Play all three for a great time! Not perfect, but glad I got into the franchise!

after trying and failing to go through the slog that was the first two games, this game solidifies itself as a classic. improving so much that the other games failed on, combat feels meaty and satisfying, and the story ties up krotos's revenge story nicely (even tho it feels a little undeserved)

🏆 Platinum trophy #225

Set piece after set piece. This is peak video game experience
The challenges were definitely still annoying but still doable
and a little reminder out there ❗️there is an exploit for the titan difficulty level but it would require a second playthrough. I discovered this way too late and had to suffer through the titan difficulty but hey it was a fun challenge

For the longest time, I've wanted to get into the God of War series through the original trilogy, but because Sony is run by morons, I can't actually play any of those games except God of War III. Unless you own a PS2 or a PS3, the only way to play the first two entries in one of PlayStation's most iconic franchises is to get a PS Now account, which isn't even available in my region. Remaking or remastering a game obviously pretty difficult, but they could've at least ported these games over to the PS Store or something instead of letting these games be forgotten by the passage of time (among many, many others). Ranting and frustration aside, I thankfully wasn't confused or lost in the game's plot like I thought I would be, and I also had a lot of fun with God of War III as a whole.

Because this was my introduction to the series, I obviously can't judge how well God of War III connects to the stories of the previous two games, but as a blood-soaked and vengeance-fueled hack-&-slash game, it works really well as a standalone experience. The combat here is responsive and brutal, as Kratos rips and tears through his foes with a heavy dose of quick time events that somehow don't feel tacky or obnoxious at all. The finishers were both satisfying and vicious, and that especially applies to the horrific ways that Kratos kills the game's bosses. Along with the ferocious action, God of War III also features a lot of platforming and puzzles, and not only do they serve as good breaks in between all the hacking and slashing, but they're also fun in their own right, even if the combat was the best part of the game for me. I also liked how the game introduced its new items and weapons, as they all felt engrained within the progression of the story.

Kratos is as compelling as he is ruthless, and watching him bludgeon and destroy everyone and everything that stands in his path made his occasional moments of regret and sorrow feel that much more impactful. Terrence C. Carson's gleefully over-the-top performance makes listening to Kratos speak entertaining on its own, and it also meshes surprisingly well with the rest of the game's tone. My only real complaint about the game was that I didn't get nearly as much use out of the unlockable weapons as I did out of the unlockable items, as the only other weapon that I used consistently alongside the Blades of Exile was the Nemean Cestus. Other than that, though, God of War III was a really fun time, and if I somehow come across a PS2 or a PS3, then I'll try and play the other two games in the original trilogy as soon as I can.

Épico em todos os seus pontos. O ápice de gameplay da saga e de longe com os bosses mais incríveis de se presenciar. É surpreendente que este seja um jogo de PS3 originalmente. God of War nunca irá superar este momento.

RAGE OF SPARTA BAYBEE TIME TO KILL THAT MF ZEUS

THE TITANS DENY ME MY REVENGE SO GET THEIR RAGGEDY ASS WHILE U AT IT

AND EVERYBODY ELSE, WHY NOT

Call me crazy, but God of War III is the pinnacle of the original God of War series. It impressively iterates on the foundation created by the PlayStation 2 God of War games and elevates the series stylistically and in a game design sense. I'd been feeling like both the PS2 games and the PSP games were too similar, perhaps from fear of deviating from a winning formula, but God of War III manages to take the series in some new directions. Tweaks like making certain enemies less frustrating by adding new moves for countering them, tying magic to weapons, and having a host of items all aid to make the combat feel fluid and free-flowing. The game's story is still a little juvenile with its treatment of women and its dialogue, but there are hints of the maturity seen in 2018's reboot. This was a wonderful conclusion to the original trilogy, and I think it will remain my favorite as Ascension's reception appears to be more mixed.

Por muitos considerado o melhor jogo da franquia, eu adorei jogar e aproveitar esse game maravilhoso e revolucionário que ainda faz sucesso até hoje. Logo logo irei em busca da platina!

Very good, sensational game, even though it's from the last generation, it has good qualities. I miss this Crayton.

This game was my first entry into the series, and damn. The combat was insanely intense and fun, the graphics were charming, the voice acting was good and this game was just fun overall. The only criticism I could have towards this game is the fact that you had to complete way too many puzzles in my opinion. It's not that they were hard, it's just that they kinda killed the flow of the game. But, they didn't diminish my enjoyment of the game overall.

I think most people would expect this game to not be some 5/5 masterclass game. In some ways, they'd definitely be right. If you compare this to most other hack and slash games, it's just okay. It doesn't have the depth a DMC has, the fun a Bayonetta has, or the deep story of any brawling game from Yakuza to Xenoblade.

Yet still, I'm drawn to God of War III like a fly to shit. And I don't even care.

God of War III just holds so many top spots for me: in essence, it's the perfect ending to the Greek series. Everything is resolved at the end, and nothing's much for interpretation. However, I still love how action-packed and sweet this game is all the way through.

For the gameplay, yeah, it's about as good as GOW2 with again, more tweaks to make it great. Kratos learns even more powerful skills as he romps through the underworld to Mount Olympus, and it's fun all the way through. I specifically love 3 thanks to its Metroidvania qualities of returning to the underworld area as you're exposed to more of the story, and you replay certain areas with better weapons, upgrades, and gear. All weapons are earned in the most badass ways, too. Slaying the Gods and taking their weapons at peak power in Kratos's hands is pure euphoria, and you feel what it's like to be the scariest motherfucker in Greek mythology. You are actually the God of War.

I think most people would find the story for this game weak, as it sort of works like a boss-rush game, with small level chunks to pacify you as you move onto the next big bad, but by God, I love how this game handles GOW2. You've witnessed in GOW2 at this point how Kratos basically does not give a shit anymore about humanity through his time reversing shenanigans at the end of the game, he just wants to bring his wife and kid back, fate be damned.

Well, humanity be damned also, because Kratos basically kills everyone on the Earth within the first hour of the game. As you get this insane POV shot of Kratos mauling Posideon's face to pulp, the water around the world is just flooding hundreds of feet up every goddamn second. People still exist in the world, and yet, Kratos indirectly kills all of them within the first hour because he wants what he wants that bad. Later, killing Hermes unleashes a plague upon the world, as killing most other gods make the world considerably worse. Kratos doesn't care as long as he gets back at Zeus for what he did to Athena.

I honestly just love this game as a guilty pleasure and as a great game. Whereas 2018's GOW tries to make Kratos this somber, tired man who is more diplomatic than angry, GOW3 just puts it all out there and succeeds by having this be the conclusion to the madness-driven man that we've watched develop over the past two mainline games, even more counting the PSP/Vita games, and watching him get his vengeance cannot be topped with another game's feeling.

And as you watch the last cutscene, and the choices Kratos makes, you realize what good revenge does when the world has nothing left to give you.

If that isn't deep enough for a series that critics love to piss on and act like 2018 is the first time anything introspective has ever been said about God of War, I don't know what is. Sure, 2018 is great, but this is the top dog. The ultimate ending to a legendary franchise.

This feels and plays like a PS2 game that got released on PS3, then remastered for PS4 and I played it on a PS5. The only other God of War I've played is the "reboot" PS4 game and can see why they felt they needed to press the rest button after this title.

It's a very satisfying game to get through. The pace never drops and you don't feel overwhelmed by the enemies until later in the game. It makes you actually feel like a powerful god rather than struggling your way through. Combat could feel a bit "meatier" and less floaty.

It's nice to play a game that you can actually play and not have to learn countless crafting systems or worry about skill trees etc. Upgrading weapons is easy and straight forward leaving you to focus more on playing the game.

While it feels a bit dated, it's definitely a fun experience that doesn't outstay it's welcome.

Definitely the best game in the original series. More of the same and has a few of the same problems of the older games (such as some annoying enemies, wonky platforming, and a lack of interesting narrative driving it forward) but feels better to play and has more interesting weapons and abilities than previous entries. Ending was kind of bad but I wasn't playing this for the story. Glad I waiting until after playing Ascension and all of the others to play this one because I would have dropped Ascension hard if I had gone from this to that.

🤬Difficulty - felt easy. I played on hard and did not find any issues with the game. Most of the time I could clear waves and plan out how i wanted to attack. The game does get you to use all abilities and I did not use the same 3 button combo over and over again. I found fire element to be the strongest for my play style.
🌄Graphics – Great graphics and still hold up today, especially on remaster. This game is just so epic and how it presents scale, amazing. The animations are smooth, its awesome to look at. Of course its not going to look like Ghost of Tshushima.
🌦 Atmosphere/Music – I felt so bad ass in this game. I felt like Kratos in their world. Loved it! The music is absolutely amazing. The chanting of Kratos' name and the crescendo of orchestra. I felt such like a bad ass. AMAZING music !
📚 Main Story / Characters – Its fine its a revenge story. As usual I had trouble keeping up with the details but I got the over all gist and didn't care. I just want to go kill the next god.
🤺 Combat – This game has some of the best combat of any game. C'mon who doesn't want to scale Gaia and take on Greek gods! Who doesn't want to face 1vs1 Hercules and beat his ass? Every fight in this game is A+ and epic. God damn, just righting this review I want to play it again. The game also introduces different elemental blades, they were fun to play with and i did end up switching here and there based on what I needed but overall stuck to fire. I got familiar with all his moves and used them as i needed. I believe you can probably get through the game mashing but why....
🧭 Side Activities / Exploration – did not do the collection trophies and the arena trophies. The ones I did collect were fun and some of them required skill so I had to try a few times. Arena trophies are too hard and known to be luck based, and will suck out any joy I had in this game. The puzzles in game were great too. It never felt cheap and everything can be figured out on your own with exploration.
🚗 Movement/Physics – Fluid, awesome. Scaling monsters, climbing walls.
📣 Voice acting – AWESOMEEEE. So much angst in Kratos voice. He doesn't give a crap about anything and it shows!
🥇 Best thing about the game - Epic combat and music. Immersion, Adrenaline pumping. The opening of this game is one of the best in any video game history. Somehow it manages to start that high and still keep it that high the entire game!
👎 Worst thing about the game - none. I donno doesn't last forever?
💡Final Thoughts:

This game builds on everything in 1 and 2 and makes it even better. The graphics updates make the immersion that much better. The music, the fights, the boss battle direction, the variety, this game is a masterpiece and a must play. I love god of war series so maybe I am a little biased but don't care. I had so much fun! This game makes me feel so god damn bad ass. Played this on my road to complete all the GOW games before GOW 2018. I am slowly building up to it!

Let me start off by saying I have no nostalgia for this game, I didn't grow up with a PS3 and the very first time I played it was back in 2017 so this is only my 2nd time playing the game so when I say it is my favorite in the series it is through a fresh experience and not rose-tinted glasses.

God of War III features bigger and more grandiose set-pieces and locations, the sheer scale of the game is just insane exploring everywhere from Hades to the heights of Mt Olympus and who could forget the breathtaking, awestriking view as you climb the Chain of Balance or move the Labyrinth cubes in the cavern. I still think God of War I&II have more of an adventurous feeling since in God of War III you're mostly just in Olympus the whole game, but the sheer scope and scale of the locations and set-pieces more than make up for that.

Of course the locations are not the only thing that is bigger and better. No, the boss fights are easily some of the coolest and most epic in not only the whole series, but action video games in general. God of War III is a game that revels in its gory spectacle and every boss fight is just a joy to watch unfold from the very beginning of fighting Poseidon on the back of the Titan Gaia to carving off pieces of Hades flesh or ripping off fingernails from the Titan Chronos as you scale his body and even getting into a bloody fist fight with Hercules (Shout out to the devs for getting Kevin Sorbo who voiced Hercules in the iconic 90s show 'Hercules the Legendary Journeys' to voice him in this game as well). God of War II introduced epic boss fights with heroes and demi-gods from Greek myths, but in God of War III you actually get to fight the gods themselves and I was never once disappointed with how those fights played out.

Combat is mostly the same as the first two games, Kratos still has his primary blades (Known as the Blades of Exile in this game) alongside various magic powers and other weapons you pick up on your journey like the Claws of Hades or the Neman Cestus. There is one major addition to the formula like the Item Power bar which recovers over time after using secondary items like Apollo's Bow or Herme's Boots which are mostly used for platforming and puzzles, but also have combos tied to them which can add an edge in combat. This is the most polished, fast, fluid and complex the combat formula has ever been in God of War to date.

The story for God of War III is once again a tale of vengeance as Kratos butchers all the greek gods one by one on his path to Zeus and causes an apocalyptic event to befall the people of Greece. This time Kratos must quell the deadly Flame of Olympus to once again use Pandora's Box against Zeus as he did all those years ago against Ares and to do that he must find Pandora herself. God of War III expands the world and lore of the series in clever ways that often even tie back into the very first game flipping what we thought we knew on its head and I love that. Also I will say how I saw that at the time of this game's first release a lot of people complained about the ending and found it weird, but I love the dynamic between Kratos and Pandora and how she helps him develop and grow and it fits even better after playing God of War (2018). So I would say that God of War III ended the trilogy in a very satisfying way because while it is very dark and tragic there's still a glimmer of hope for the future as well.

God of War is a series that has only gotten better every new entry (At least in terms of the original trilogy) God of War (2005) set the standard for action/adventure games, God of War II redefined that standard and raised the bar in every way imaginable and finally God of War III mastered and perfected the formula. Featuring more grandiose set-pieces, some of the most epic bosses in the action game genre, the best God of War combat system to date and a well written story that gives a satisfying conclusion to Kratos' vengeance filled trilogy, God of War III is everything I loved about the first two games, but turned up to 11 making it the definitive God of War experience.

The final chapter of the Greek saga for kratos a very epic journey but I feel kind of bad for kratos. Try this game if you’re very interested in kratos story tho it’s pretty hard

All killer, no filler. This game gets going and never stops until you hit the credits. Would've loved a few more puzzle sections, but this is by far my favorite God of War game pre-GoW 2018.

My favorite direction the God of War series has taken so far in terms of both story AND gameplay so far. Feels somewhat dated for sure, tho.

The brutality and tight controls of the original with a clean look.
Every bit as good as I remember it being.

As someone who only played the new God of War series before, I had a hard time getting into the older series; I tried streaming the first 2 games on the PS4 but they didn't run well and the only thing I could do is to directly jump into the third game... and so I did.
I got to say, even though the story in this game is very simple and not engaging at all, having played the newer series first made the story more meaningful than it seems to be.
The story isn't an important part of the older series though, the gameplay is, and surprisingly enough, God of War III's gameplay holds up extremely well; it almost plays like a modern hack 'n' slash game. The amount of QTEs in the game is overwhelming, sure, but still, the gameplay is very enjoyable, with many different weapons and abilities.
Another important thing in the game is the bosses; they're a major part of the game and they're quite impressive. The music, the spectacle, the scale, all of these elements combined make some of the bosses stand out.
Also, the soundtrack is amazing; no other game has made me feel this way with its music before.
Lastly, the graphics and the audio design are slightly outdated for sure but they hold up well for the most part.

Pros:
+ Great gameplay
+ Spectacular bosses
+ Fantastic music

Cons:
- Many QTEs

Narrative: ?/10
Gameplay: 8/10
Characters: ?/10
Music: 9/10
Graphics/Audio: ?/10

Final Rating: 8/10
- Great -
God of War III is an epic, fun and special hack 'n' slash game even to this day, despite coming out more than a decade ago.

Do I recommend it?:
Yes, for sure, especially for fans of the newer series.

The violent culmination of the original series doesn't disappoint. God of War III builds off of all the things that have made this series entertaining and pumps it to the extreme, while mostly improving things that have always been so so with the series.

Kratos is back bby and things start off immediately where things left off in GoW 2 and it fits pretty perfectly with this series story. The God of War story has always been pretty good for a game that's so violent and action heavy and God of War 3 does a good job of wrapping things up for the most part.

It's maybe a bit too longwinded near the end where it feels like the final stretch goes on for a while and less focused than the bulk of the start. There's a decent chunk of backtracking as well so even from a location standpoint it just gets a little repetitive.

That being said, the set pieces in this game are pretty impressive. Very big, very epic, very bloody. After two of these games still pretty fresh in my head, both with large scale action parts to them, God of War 3 surpasses all of them easily.

This game definitely takes advantage of the system shift to PS3 with its scale and action. Climbing up Gaia, fending off enemies and all the insanity going on around you is easily the best of the franchise up to this point and might be one of my favorite set pieces for an action/adventure game. The remaster of this version to the PS4 just adds to the impressive scale, scope and look too.

Gameplay wise it's pretty much what you remember from this franchise but much tighter and improved on for the most part. More weapons, easier to transition between them all and enemies overall feel more designed where certain weapons are almost a requirement in order to get rid of them. It keeps the game play fresh, especially when the game starts to mix and match some of those bad guys together, making you swap between weapons on a dime to quickly stomp everyone out.

The weapons and tools you get to help you cause mass murder are all pretty fun to use and all feel quite different from one another. Whether it's your tried and true double blades, or two closer range weapons, or a more ride range weapon you get near the end of the game. All differentiate themselves not just on a range standpoint but just in a use and attack pattern setting.

These weapons will also change your secondary/magic attack, all with their own advantages depending on the situation. I did find myself drawing to a favorite amongst the weapons I had but when you have to swap to take advantage of an enemy weakness, they never feel bad to use or tough to figure out even if it had been a while since I used it. Since you can swap so fluidly and seamlessly, you're never far from your favorite once you want to go back to it, the control swap is very responsive

The controls overall are quite responsive, about the only consistent issue I ran into was the game not really recognizing the double jump if you waited a bit in your second jump press.

Since we are on the subject of negatives with this game, there were also some camera and aiming issues I ran into with some consistency.

The game does get a bit creative with how it uses the camera and for the most part, these shifts work quite well but because its a fixed camera where you can't move it around, there are a few times where the camera is just not placed well.

Sometimes the camera makes judging gaps and distance a bit of a pain. There were a handful of times when I was trying to make a jump where I thought I had cleared it but it turned out, I hadn't and I'd fall to my death.

There are times during battle too where enemies just felt a bit off camera and hard to find while taking damage.

Since the aiming with some of your tools auto aim, trying to take them down and stop taking arrows to the face would be a bit of a pain since sometimes you can't see if the aim circle is over them. Other times the game will auto aim you on other enemies and trying to move away from them and onto the target you are trying to specify can be really challenging. It even felt like at times like the game would only auto aim on the exact opposite range I was trying to get. If I needed to hit someone from far away, I'd only get guys right next to me, if I needed to hit some enemies from close range, I'd only get bad guys from far away showing up. This by no means happened every time but it did pop up a bit too much for my liking, enough for me to notice.

Some of the quick time events can be tough to follow as well. Though they are much more responsive than the previous two (though this could've easily been a streaming issue on my end), they've setup the QTE's to have the button you need to press appear on the screen where that button is in relation to the controller. The X button appears on the bottom part of the screen, the Triangle in the top part of the screen, so on and so forth. Because the screen can be quite busy at times, it's sometimes hard to tell when the button shows up because so many things are showing up in the various quadrants of the screen.

That's really the only major issues I had though with this game. It pretty much nails and improves on everything across the board which was already pretty solid from top to bottom to begin with. Tighter controls, better, more engaging gameplay, better set pieces, and somehow even more violent. With the bar already pretty high, it just makes everything that much more impressive.

It's great, it's really great for real. It improves on the already excellent God of War II in every single way and ties up the original trilogy's story of Kratos and his path of vengeance very nicely. Combat is still exceptional and more varied with the new weapons available here, with the Cestus fists even rivaling the Blades with how much I used them. The levels here feel like the peak of the series as platforming, combat, and puzzle solving work so fabulously in tandem with one another without any bad apples for puzzles in the mix this time. One aspect I really enjoyed was the interconnectivity of the levels and revisiting them with new upgrades, making the areas in this entry feel more connected with each other rather than places to visit once and check off and never come back to again. The game is so drop dead gorgeous even in the original more than ten years later, highlighted especially in the sections climbing up on the titans like Chronos. Nothing else to say really, GOW III was just a fantastic game from start to finish.

Ragnarok replay continuation

You know, going in I was thinking that this game could get worse this playthrough and that it wouldn’t be as good as my first playthrough

Nah it’s just as perfect as that first playthrough

"Zeus! Your son has returned! I bring the destruction of Olympus!"

By all rights I should hate this game. A combo juggler spectacle action game full of QTEs, and that head-down, eyes-up XTREME gamebro rage fantasy from the early 2000s. It's the kind of game that makes spindly 13 year old boys breathlessly whisper, "That's so badass...". It's downright cringey to play in front of other people.

And yet…

The larger-than-life spectacle of it is, well, spectacular, and I can never get enough Greek mythology. The set pieces are incredible, and there are some interesting environmental puzzles in between the bloodthirsty combat sequences.

And in a great favor to unskilled gamers like me, the easy mode is REALLY easy. You can just sit back, mash buttons, and enjoy the ride.
