Game journalists only hate this because they suck at it

good game to play with someone if you want them to leave your house

I think Star Allies is a fantastic game but it’s not something I can really recommend, it’s very much a “you had to be there” game.
The game is very much fanservice for all of Kirby up until this game but especially the Dark Matter trilogy (DL2, DL3, 64). If you don’t have an attachment to those games, you won’t get much out of this game. But also, if you’re new to Kirby and want to play this one, you almost definitely don’t have the same emotional attachment and won’t get much out of it. (…and/or you’ve probably been spoiled already.)
Gameplay wise, the main story is lot easier than usual to make up for the 4-player aspect. But it’s a little too 4-player friendly and ends up being ridiculously easy. Guest Star and Heroes in Another Dimension are fun.
Being a continuation of a set of Kirby games that’ve slowly been getting a worse reputation over the years for their flaws, easier than usual main game, and people expecting the game to be more like Super Star because of the helper system all work against this game. It was a FANTASTIC anniversary celebration, but that’s exactly why I can’t necessarily recommend it.

Not the worst Kirby game but definitely the most frustrating. An amazing roster and selection of abilities & moves locked into a game with zero level design and a paltry boss selection. It took the lads two damn decades to bring Adeleine back and she's stuck in here.

Forgotten Land is great so far, but if 3D becomes the franchise's new permanent direction, I hope they return to a lot of the ideas that got tossed and forgotten into this.

Cute game, but it's only fun for about 20 minutes.

played the version of this game that i think (?) is the definitive one with all the dream friends or whatever so i have no FUCKING clue what the base game was like but looking at the comments i can guess it was bland as shit but thats not the version ive played so i dont care

the game looks beautiful and controls wonderfully theres a roster of great copy abilities the friend mechanic feels kind of forced but i enjoyed my time nonetheless and using dream friends is based as fuck adventuring with my goth bf meta knight and such

problems arise when you realise that the world and level design in this game are dog shit so youre just going to press right on the analog and push the A button sometimes if you want to get through the (plain, bland and uninspired) levels with some "challenge" or always if you want to just get done with it and skip the whole thing super mario land 2 tanuki power style
and . btw this goes on for 3 or 4 hours or so and somehow i got bored as hell so that must mean something (reason why i havent even opened the extra modes because im already done with this game dear god)

the final boss is outstanding and i dont understand how it ended up being in this mid game but it boosted the score a bit for sure because thats like peak kirby tbh and the music is breathtaking but that can be said for the whole game or the whole kirby series for that matter

anyway i enjoyed my time doing the kissy kissy stuff with meta knight (⁄ ⁄•⁄ω⁄•⁄ ⁄)

or as someone very wise in the comment section said . group sex

This game is painfully mediocre. Kirby games aren't supposed to be hard, I know that, but this is so mindless I was playing this as I was watching my friends play Minecraft and didn't die a single time (maybe I should've played minecraft). I beat this game in one sitting taking around 6 hours and was boring for the most part. There is no interesting theme or gimmick like Planet Robobot it's just a super generic game you wouldn't expect from Kirby considering the team always has unique and intriguing ideas up their sleeve. Boring game, gonna go play Planet Robobot now.
5/10

I don't really know how to feel about this being my first Kirby game. Like most of the game is VERY easy and so easy that you don't even have to focus on the game.

The platforming, the puzzles and the boss fights are all pretty easy for the most part.

Also the environments just seem kinda generic. Grass land, ice land, lava land and these environments aren't changed up enough to justify being here. You get what I mean?

I don't really have anything to say about the DLC characters or Heroes in Another Dimension cause I've barely dipped my toe into it and I'm not really interested in picking Star Allies back up again at all

Overall, Star Allies is an okay game that was kinda forgettable. Honestly, I don't think I've thought about Star Allies this much in YEARS.

I'll probably get Kirby and the Forgotten Land eventually, but video games are expensive man and I gotta get One Piece Odyssey and LoZ Tears of the Kingdom at launch before I even think about buying Forgotten Land.

rare kirby L

final boss is cool enough you almost forget how boring and cluttered the rest of the game is

almost

surprisingly, kirby is egg shaped in this one

This games levels are designed for multiplayer, meaning they are very wide and boring and empty feeling when played by yourself. its a standard kirby adventure and is very polished and looks nice. the final boss is the coolest part of the game and i wish the whole game was like that.

very very very very very very very very boring.. but you get to play as Dark Meta Knight and Marx.. so like.. it has something

This game kinda ruined discussing kirby online didn't it? lol

Anyway, on replay I surprisingly loved this quite a bit, it's probably the easiest mainline kirby game yet and the level design can be kinda empty at some points, I think it's just a really fun game, it controls well and the selection of copy abilities is really good. The ability to have up to 4 friends was really nice and reminded me of super star, which is always a good thing in my book, being able to combine certain copy abilites with wind, fire, water and such was also a neat idea, and so were the friend power ups, they can be pretty fun, throwing your friends has never felt so good. I also adore the theming in this game, something about places like the Jambastion and other locations feels really cool, and so are the boss descriptions hidden in the pause menus. Call me a sucker for call backs but I also loved the dream friends in this, they offered really different unique and fun experiences wether I played as them or not. Bosses in this game are also really fun too, especially the final boss, its in the running for the best final boss in a kirby game imo. The soundtrack is pretty nice as well, there are some real jams on there.

Side modes are pretty fun as well, this game probably has the best arena in the series with so many different ways to do the boss rush to make it accessible to those who like the easier side of things, but the game can make things difficult when it wants to in the arena, even if adeline and the mage sisters kinda break the whole thing in half.

Heros in another dimension is a nice epilouge to the main story of the game, the addition of collecting hearts throughout levels is also pretty fun, with the reward for doing so unlocking some of the best dream friends in the game which is an awesome reward for going after collectibles.

Guest Star mode is kinda disappointing however, at least on 1 playthrough, it's meta knightmare or Dedede tour, but instead of going through the game again at a faster pace with a new character or set of abilities with harder foes to face, you just play as a friend though the entire game again, albeit at a faster pace than the main story, there's not even any harder versions of bosses, with the exception of Morpho Knight, who is an awesome boss, apparently things change up when you play as dream friends, which I haven't done yet, but why wait until the player beats the game once in order to offer the option to play it again, this time with actual variety? it strikes me as weird, but this mode is still kinda fun.

I feel like I look back at this game the way people look back on super mario 3d world, at the time people found both games to be pretty generic and worried for the future of the series, as this was their big jump to an HD console release. Only difference is 3d world has actually benefited from hindsight and become quite a beloved game while star allies seems to be considered what it was at release, a generic, unfinished, mixed bag, but I don't know, I think it's a pretty fun game in hindsight, the additional content HAL added after release is also pretty cool even if I would've preferred it to be there day 1. I get why some people don't like this game, or even find it a bore, but maybe replay it and you'll have a tiny bit of fun, I hope

Overhated i love it even if it has obvious issues. The gameplay is great and the story is amazing

Despite being a the weakest Kirby game in years, especially at launch, the free updates really helped make this game feel more complete. The dream friends and additional harder mode are very welcome changes to an otherwise lacking game. There were hardly any collectibles so levels were no where near as replayable as other games in the series. Additionally, to accommodate multiple characters on the screen, level design felt a lot more barren than the 3DS games. It's visually beautiful though and I love the copy ability roster.

This game is undeniably flawed, the level design and gimmicks are lacking compared to previous kirby games, and core mechanics such as the helpers and ability mixing are half baked. But dammit I cant hate this game. The replayability is off the charts and even then just having helpers and the massive amount of abilities are just nice. Dream Friends is an amazing way to bring back characters across the series, and the story and lore is still unbeaten in any kirby game. It's heavily flawed but it's always a game that I love in spite of that.

You get to throw a friend heart at enemies! To make friends! But the limit you can- but- but you can only have three hearts, because you can only have three friends.

This is one of the most mixed of mixed bags I've played in a while, which makes sense because my relationship with the Kirby series is kind of complicated. While games like Kirby Super Star (both original and Ultra) and Kirby Air Ride are some of my favorite games of all time, a lot of times my experience with Kirby games ends up being pretty weird. There are games like Kirby's Dreamland 3, which is a beautiful game, but getting 100% gets too annoying and tedious for me to remember it fondly. Kirby games tend to do this thing where in order to get the main collectable you have to have chosen the exact right power up earlier in the level and know exactly what to do with it in order to get the collectable, otherwise you simply have to do the whole level again, and I never enjoyed this aspect of the series. Kirby Squeak Squad did this so much of this that, along with just feeling super mediocre in terms of gameplay, I pretty much gave up on the series, and haven't played a new installment since the DS. With this in mind, I'm both super impressed and disappointed with Star Allies.

Star Allies is the latest in what seems to be the current formula of Kirby game, starting with Return to Dreamland. I had missed out on all the games in this style, and I had no idea just how elaborate the powers have gotten. Like, not only are there so many new power ups, many probably introduced in previous entries, but they all have so many different inputs, it rules. Old powerups feel a lot more exciting and ones that are new like spider and staff are great as well. This makes switching power ups a lot easier, as it no longer feels like certain power ups are more boring than others, and so I had a lot more fun with the variety of abilities here.

This game also has the dream friends, characters from previous games that can now be used as partners or playable characters in other modes. All of the returning characters look wonderful and their animations are perfect for their characters (Marx and Adeleine are my personal favorites). They also all have really fun movesets, where boss characters just have their full boss moveset available to use and other characters have super unique and exciting movesets to work with. I love this aspect of the game, but I do feel bad for people who bought this at launch and probably finished story mode without ever getting to use these characters.

Story mode ends up being the weakest part of this game. The level design just feels like it's on autopilot, like "yeah these are the parts that make up a Kirby level, ship it". I know I said I didn't like the way previous games handled collectibles, but "the power up you need for this challenge is right next to the challenge and it can be completed in one step" isn't necessarily the answer I wanted. The bland level design isn't helped by the way worlds are structured, where there are only four worlds and the last one has way more than the others. The last world has you going to several planets in space, which mostly just means different planets of the same themes we've seen in previous worlds. This leads to finishing the fourth world feeling like nothing, as there's really no progression to the levels. You'd think for one of Nintendo's most beloved characters, there'd be more polish for the story mode, but it feels like nothing.

The actual mechanic of gaining partners with hearts is kind of neat, and it's nice to basically have three back up power-ups. I wish I could turn my current power up into a partner like in Super Star as well, though, but I guess that's more of a personal preference. I imagine this game gets a lot better in co-op, as a lot of games do, but in single player it can feel a little much to have three CPU partners, especially in bosses where it becomes hard to tell what's a boss attack and what's an attack from your partners. There's also friend abilities, where you can combine partner powers with your current power, and I thought it was going to get into some good Kirby 64 stuff but it really just amounts to different melee abilities having elemental properties or throwing partners at blocks, which was disappointing. The friend actions are actually pretty fun though, I actually didn't mind any of the sequences that used them.

After completing the story mode, you unlock the three big post-game modes, and they're all great. Being able to do a boss rush as the dream friends is super fun, and Heroes in Another Dimension is just some really good Kirby game design. Guest Star isn't as interesting, but it's still fun. These post-game modes really prove that there's a lot solid about this game. I constantly found myself admiring the presentation and soundtrack, enjoying the bosses (the final boss in this game is incredible, both in concept and execution), being impressed by complexity of the power-ups, taking screenshots of every frame of Adeleine and Ribbon's animations, but also wishing I was playing a better game, hoping for levels that weren't just the same thing over and over again. I have a feeling that I jumped into the series at a point where it's become a bit fatigued, but despite everything I think there's still some fun here. Really, my main takeaway is that I got to get into Triple Deluxe and Planet Robobot, as it seems those games deliver where this one doesn't.

Not a great game but a good vehicle for co-op banter. If you play this with friends over the course of a year and then get to the final difficulty in Ultimate Choice and you all pull a huge clutch and win... you will feel at peace. You will be at rest. It's over now. Go take a nap (thing that Kirby does)

when they start to form the friend circle and roll down the hill nfs most wanted cop wheel style i almost lost it

A fairly fun Kirb-venture. That finale went down hard! I've heard a lot of people complain that the game is really easy, as you can just let your allies do the tough parts, but the post-game content more than makes up for it.

I am a huge fan of Kirby and this is a pretty solid ending to 2D Kirby if this is really it but honestly it isn't the best 2D Kirby by a long shot.

I feel like this game is overhated. It's still the same fun and adorable Kirby game and a great semi-new concept that's really fun to do a lot of things with. I do say it was a bit short and can be a bit dull but that final battle was so worth it.

its very simple and very very easy (well its a kirby game) very fun in coop, liked some of the ost,the extra modes add a little bit more flavor to the game and the dlc characters are fun.

also the whale with scuba googles is peak design
