I definitely enjoyed playing this prologue that they've released, and I'm excited for future chapters!!!! :D
The idea to make the prologue chapter not actually have someone die but the Mastermind forcing them to do a "practice trial" for an old already solved murder was ingenious!! it's got me wondering if this isn't the first time the game's been conducted~
I think my favorite characters are Eloise and Wolfgang, I really REALLY want to see them interact with each other more. So I'm hoping they even talk to each other a little bit more before either of them die.
The plot is definitely a 5/5 for me so far but....... the game mechanics...... are like a 2??? (not as in, they're bad, but there's just some QoL stuff and some other changes that need to be made i think that would drastically improve the player's experience. go watch nezumiVA's video, she basically says everything i want to say on the subject.) like, it's so hard to Do Things in the game, which sucks, and i think there's a few small things that could be added into the thing to make the experience more enjoyable (like, maybe a sound effect when you're absorbing the words for the pathos bullets. or like a meter bar, so you can tell that you're actually absorbing and you didn't misclick??)
I'm putting it as a 3 but i still think you should absolutely check out this game <3 it's so much fun to me as a danganronpa fan

[watched friends play chapter 0]

this is like if a group of people who used to like danganronpa but grew resentful of its flaws grouped together and said "let's make danganronpa but GOOD" and completely missed the mark on what people actually liked about danganronpa. despite the obvious tie-ins to the franchise's structure/UI/art/what-have-you, the game refuses to admit its roots. it's like it wasn't made out of love, but sheer, unadulterated spite.

it gets 2 additional stars for having a butch in it though

The demo was definitely interesting. Excited to see what they do with this

only the prologue has released so far, but i'm already having thoughts and feelings about this game.

the cast is by far the best part about this game. for a killing game story to really work, you need to either really get attached to the characters or despise them and want to see them suffer. and honestly, i'm pretty much loving every character so far! damon is a great protagonist because he's so full of himself and i would absolute hate someone like him in real life. wolfgang is such a nice guy, but i wouldn't be suprised if he turned around and stabbed everyone in the back at some point. i love the design of characters like toshiko or kai and the voice acting is pretty good for pretty much every character (didn't spot anyone that felt odd to me, but i'm personally not a big fan of ulysses mumbling-- ). there are a few characters i'm neutral - but leaning positive - about, like ingrid, desmond or eloise, that i would probably love if i had more time with them. the only characters i don't have much of an opinion on so far are eva and wenona. wenona is really smart, i have to give her that, but she needs more screen time for me to care about her. eva on the other hand is untrustworthy so far, even if i don't believe her to be an evil person. still, not enough i know about her and when it came to first impressions, she just didn't blow me away.

now, i could probably gush a few more paragraphs about charactere, but for the sake of it, i'm going to mention the game play now. it's very close to danganronpa, so nothing new for me, but i played danganronpa on console, so playing this game on pc was new for me. i did have a few problems with the game, only during the class trial though. this could of course be partially the fault of my pc being too slow or weak to handle the game, but i would like to mention those problems anyways.

the first non stop debate was an absolute pain and it didn't get much better afterwards. slowing down time worked just fine, but aiming and actually shooting the truth bullets was miserable. although i had the time slowed down, the bullet was so slow, that it barely ever hit anything. i often times clicked right on the weak point and the bullet would still miss. sometimes, weak points or arguments wouldn't even show up! there was one non stop debate in particular (i believe the third one?) where half of the time the first argument wouldn't load. i heared the line, but didn't see it on screen. and the actual weak point of that round flew over the screen SO quickly, that i had to slow down time while someone else was still presenting their argument, to even have a slight chance! that mixed together with the time limit wasn't much fun. this might entirely be a me problem and due to my pc being slow, but other things worked just fine. running around was fine, as well as other parts of the trial. but the non stop debate was barely doable.

the closing argument was also a little weird, since suddenly my mouse was really sensitive and if i would just move it slightly, my cursor was already two panels further. it wasn't the worst thing and i still managed to do everything very well, but it was a bit odd.

despite all of the issues i had with the actual class trial, i really enjoyed this game! or well, the prologue at least! i have very high hopes in this game and it seems like it might meet them or even surpass them. i'm really looking forward to more of it!

As I'm writing this, only the prologue of Project: Eden's Garden has released. Even though it's only the prologue, the quality of this fangame is incredible. Not only does it replicate Danganronpa's style and gameplay perfectly, but it also surpasses it. This game has massive potential to become something extraordinary.

As I started playing, the first thing that stood out the most to me was the protagonist. Damon is very different from Danganronpa's previous protagonists. He feels he is superior in every way compared to the other ultimates and believes that the title "ultimate" has declined in recent years. In short, he's an asshole, and I love that. It makes him feel unique compared to the previous protagonists.

Besides him, there are all of his classmates, and they are all fantastic. I won't go through all of them here, but two of my favorites are Wolfgang, the Ultimate lawyer, and Cassidy, the Ultimate pro gamer. Wolfgang's character grew on me over time. He starts as this nice guy, but his attitude changes once the class trial starts. He becomes a lot more aggressive and emotional. His outburst caught me off guard, and I'm interested in learning more about him in the future. Cassidy is just a fun, bubbly character that I can get behind. So far, she isn't a deep character, but her personality more than makes up for it. (Also, she references the stepladder joke from Ace Attorney, and I screamed.) Overall I love all the characters, unlike the past Danganronpa games where there was one or two who I could not tolerate.

I was surprised to discover how perfectly they captured Danganronpa's style. All the art in the game looks official. It's honestly crazy that it was all created from scratch. There is so much love and care put into the visuals.

Now the gameplay is what you expect from a Danganronpa game. Most of the game is just reading dialogue. It's a visual novel, so I wasn’t expecting anything else. It was fun to read the text. The characters bounce off each other well, creating fun moments.

Of course, the main draw to Danganronpa is its class trials. The class trials work the same, except there is now one brand-new addition, Pathos Bullets. You can absorb certain statements during Nonstop Debates and use them as bullets to counter or support someone's argument. These bullets appeal to a character's emotions. The neat thing about them is that they can open up optional routes. You can completely ignore this mechanic if you want to and continue using regular evidence. (Although, from what I can gather from the prologue, if you don't use pathos statements, the discussions with the characters go on longer, forcing you to do more work.) Danganronpa V3 had a similar mechanic to this with the back routes, but this feels more intuitive. It's easier to notice the pathos statements, unlike in V3, where you can lie at any time, and the only way to know if you should lie is through the music in the background. The only issue with the pathos mechanic is that absorbing the statement feels oddly unresponsive. I had trouble absorbing the statement, even though my reticle was on it while I held the button. It also doesn't help it's hard to tell if you even absorbed it. But other than that, the pathos mechanic is a great addition to class trials.

Another thing I love about the game is the music. I was completely caught off guard by how good the music was. Connecting the Dots, Beautiful Creation, and Old World Revival are my favorite music tracks in the game.

Project: Eden's Garden has made a great first impression. The characters are great, and the story is intriguing. This game has massive potential, and I'm excited to see where this goes next. If you haven't already checked out this game, you absolutely should. I would even recommend it to non-Danganronpa fans because you don't need to know anything about the games to play this.

Please note that as of the date this was written (December 17th 2022) only the prologue is out! I may revise this review later.

This was put on my radar by another friend of mine. This past month or so I've began my journey into fan-made Danganronpa spins (referred to as Fangans, a name I really love). My first one was the high quality if maybe hard-to-approach ToontownRonpa: Citizens of Distrust; a worthwhile game to be sure but probably a bit away from the typical settings and themes of these games for some people's taste. In some respects this is the first Fangan proper I've played - if such a thing could even be said to exist.

There was a lot to be excited for going into this one - the protagonist's monologue in the trailer seemed to portray him as rather stuck up about his talent, something I've never seen explored in one of these few games I've peered into. In most of these kinds of games the cast doesn't really acknowledge their talent or the academy that much for the sake of bringing a more diverse range of personalities into the killing game; seeing someone who actually takes pride in their talent and perceives certain Ultimate Students as denigrating the institution of talent is really fascinating. We see a bit of how this rubs off on the more laissez-faire cast in this prologue and I am so very for it.

The rest of the cast is great too, some of them took a bit to shine for me, but there isn't a single character I dislike, and no matter who dies in the first chapter I'm sure I'll be very sad. In particular, besides the protagonist, I'm really fond of the amicable yet brazenly passionate Wolfgang Akire, the homely motherly presence of Ingrid Grimwall, and the surprisingly reserved Diane Venicia.

Additionally the soundtrack is really lovely; we don't get a super large variety of songs but for one the ones we do get are lovely and for two all of the spectacle of this mod is incredibly lovely to see all in all, and a original soundtrack that both takes inspiration from the original Danganronpa and carves a more pensive atmosphere is really welcome to see. The sound effects here are similarly great, without getting too much into it the scene where you first start meeting the students uses sound and gameplay really brilliantly to make an utterly paralyzing experience.

The gameplay too is up to this standard. This game was made in the Unity game engine, which in my head evokes ill-optimized and messy games made by people who hopefully just haven't learned what Godot is but the polish here is lovely. This takes a lot of notes from the DRV3 engine - dialogue takes place in the 3D environments, camera jumping between character sprites physically residing in this world - and they pretty much nail it here. The mock trial teased in the trailer is similarly amazingly done; a lot of the trials in Danganronpa, though satisfying mysteries in their own right, feel like they have a whole slew of obtuse convoluted minigames keeping you from these. The first trial we get here feels comparatively stripped-back mechanically to great effect, there's some Non-Stop Debate and some fill-in-the-blanks and that's more or less it. Though, we do get extremely lovely Closing Argument graphics which are similarly well done, lovely to look at and entertaining.

Overall, I would recommend this to any fan of the original Danganronpa games whole-heartedly, and will definitely keep a finger on the pulse of this game's development; now that the engine is done and working to the extent it is I'm very excited to see the new chapters bubble up and develop other the upcoming year. I have it rated as a 4.0 as I type this review, but the only reason I hold off from a 4.5 is because this is just the prologue, but I might not even be able to contain myself in that respect! In particular if you like the more subdued vibe of the first Danganronpa game - or its good share of realistic bitterness in its cast - I would recommend this game 100%!

fantastic demo
unfortunately the development is going to last so long, one of the cast members/developers is going to be outed for something and cause the project to collapse

i want wenona to violate my labour rights

prologue was okay... this tells danganronpa in every corner

When this game is released, I will erect a shrine in Jett Dawson's name and pray to it before every play session.

At the time of writing this, I've only played the prologue. You can taste the passion and love for Danganronpa in this fan game. From the visuals to the music to the character design, this is as faithful to the original.
Unfortunately the prologue didn't grab me the way that the series that inspired it. Most frustratingly is the class trials. For whatever reason the characters logic, dialog pacing, disagreements didn't feel like characters in their own right but they kind of descend to being silhouettes of what DR characters ought.
Maybe this was just a no-win scenario whenever it comes to making such an ambitious project.
Its impressive how much effort and success the team behind the project had in their vision.
Despite my gripes, I'm still excited for the full release and I remain impressed by what the product looks like. Its a testament to the passion of the devs that I believe they can only improve from here and somehow (hopefully) go beyond just a fangame in Danganronpa's shadows and become a great game that stands on its own.

Good first episode with some boring parts. I felt like the end was really weak especially the last half of the trial. I was also not a fan of the first trial being a dummy but i think everything will turn out better and it's less predictable

12/25/2022 - 12/26/2022 Chapter 0 Prologue ( Release )
This game made my love for Danganronpa reappear, it is one of my favorite fan projects I seen in a while
Expect this to be a messy bunch of thoughts all placed in one text, I just HAVE to talk about the game

This game is doing so much well, the cast is amazing we get a different type of mc filled with arrogance, it kind of reminds me of Hajime just of course with the added parts of him being filled with Ultimate Pride, he's not completely unlikeable yet he's also not the nicest person basically to sum it up, unique and fun mc
This game also presents itself with the fastest "big large pool of my favorite characters" award, so many COOL funny characters like Wolfgang and so many FUNNY cool characters like Ulysses, I legit left the demo with 5 or more favorites. The more lines characters have the more I'm invested and the more I want to see from them
making the "rival" character a charismatic lawyer looking for absolute justice is one of the coolest ideas ever, just works really well when facing against or with the Ultimate Debater ( this also leads to the coolest scene in the entire chapter ) hoping he gets to live long, at least until chapter 4 and make that be HIS chapter to shine.

On the note of shining, this game's entire soundtrack does exactly that! the more tracks you find the more you listen to them they just get better and better, some highlights are HEAT UP, Tangled Web, Old World Revival and Critical Discussion

I was debating whether to add my nitpicks here but since it is a demo it'd be best to put them before it's official release, I'm unsure if it's a problem with unity but sometimes character outlines look chopped and the bloom in some areas ( like the bus ) gets really bad
The Ultimate Reveals sound effects and design are kinda plain, they dont have the same impact as the originals and they could probably use some more work to make the sound and look of them be cleaned up
Area transitions could be faster, wouldn't mind seeing V3's camera tilt transitions as well, when characters leave rooms they fade away too quickly leaving it just feel odd
Unsure how I feel about the font still but I do want to say some color choices for the UI dont look too good, mainly the free roam UI during investigations, and overall the game animations could be smoother but ofc it is a beta so im sure itll be fixed by its full release
the mouse controls feel really bad at times, its really noticeable in the class trials and im hoping its just a problem on my side it does feel like theres some recoil, like any movement i do i have to do force myself to stop by going the opposite way before my mouse continues moving without stopping, basically just a more precise mouse in the areas where you can move around the cursor target

A big complain I have during the investigations that I hope is just a Chapter 0 exclusive is the lack of fake or irrelevant truth bullets, for example they should've turned the clock into a truth bullet just to fill up space and mislead instead of just having a bunch of correct unordered answers, or making the selection too annoying / too empty. For example, during the "see" section of the trial, you could've argued that bucket was a valid response yet the only way to proceed is by using the tablet truth bullet, this wouldn't be as much of an issue if instead of them being forced to add every correct truth bullet, they just added random stuff you look into during investigations like the clock and step ladder instead of leaving you wondering why the bucket you know was used to blind the victim wasnt the right answer

there's other minor nitpicks like making "NO THAT'S WRONG" louder or some sound effects during Damon's counters just not sounding too great ( too high pitched or just lacking impact )

Back to some more great points this game has, the voice acting is GREAT i love a lot of the voices in this game like Wolfgang's, Jett's, Ulysses' and Eva's, all the voice actors did a really great job bringing the characters to life and making them stand out
more great things are the addition of the Pathos system, opening up different "paths" to take in a class trial. it is a much better version of V3's lying system since its much easier to tell when you can use it or if you got it

final nitpick that comes to mind is some art errors like in one of Cassidys sprites' eyes, honestly not too big of a deal considering since at the end of the day I was too focused in the game's cool elements, whenever the full game comes out I can see it with it's potential being a favorite of that year
There's so much love put into this project and so MUCH i still havent talked about like the humor, masterminds and small details in dialogue, this is a must play if you have any sort of interest in the Danganronpa series I can't wait to see more chapters and trials in the future ( even if you aren't a DR-fan there's still some worth in trying this out )

- Will Continue To Update -

some performance issues along the way (i played it day-one it'll probably be fixed soon) but this game has SO MUCH POTENTIAL bro.

it's so well made for a fan-game it's insane.
soundtrack also slaps.

Played the prologue since its out and damn. Not much to say as it is only a small portion of the game, but it sure is promising, doesn't fall for common Danganronpa tropes and tries to be new while still feeling at home, cast is cool and looks to be really fleshed out during the actual chapters.
