The best Splatoon experience you will ever find hands down

Everything feels incredibly alive in those claustrophobic train rides, and the set of challenges presented in this expansion is fun and unique, setting a new standard for Splatoon's next single-player campaigns.

If you bought this at the time when people where playing Splatoon 2, you could have used an Octoling skin with exclusive gear to show everyone else that you are someone to be afraid of, as it was definitely bonkers to flex the fact that you have beaten the most unbalanced boss fight ever made in a Nintendo game

Great DLC, i love the story and the fact you can play as an octoling in normal splatoon is a small detail but really cool

Quite possibly and easily the best singleplayer Splatoon content there is. Incredibly fun, witty, well-designed and, dare I say, fresh.

Best sploon dlc, and dare i say best nintendo DLC, and do i even darerer say best nintendo story?

Unparalleled moment in video game history.

Some great new levels for splatoon 2! Even better than the original single-player campaign.

agent 8 my beloved (also pearl and marina should've kissed)

Widely considered splatoon’s magnum opus for very valid reasons. it was a complete change up from what they did before and while it’s story leaves much to be desired especially considering the changes to the script… it still stands as the best in most fans and even my own eyes.

A nearly perfect expansion to splatoon 2, that makes its pretty good single player experience into a stellar one. The characters are all fun, and the worldbuilding/design are amazing, much like in splat 1 and 2 base game. The challenges are all really fun, new bosses, and new great unlockables. Makes me hyped for splat 3 when that happens. The final boss was a little bit of a let down if i remember correctly however.

INSANELY GOOD GAME, PEAK DLC, I LOVE LESBIANS!!!!

After the lacklustre campaign of the base game, I had high hopes that this would be much better due to all the praise I heard for it, and I was certainly not disappointed! The story isn’t much, but the mysterious air around it all definitely elevated it. I’ve never really liked much of the splatoon cast of characters, and though I continue to be indifferent to them, Pearl and Marina are definitely a step above the squid sisters with more distinct personalities and just altogether more fun interactions. Where this campaign obviously excels is the gameplay, and it SOARS right past the base game’s quality to blow me away. The short duration of the levels, the challenge cranked up but never too high, all the cute lil mem cakes with frankly beautiful little poems attached to them, that final boss fight’s sheer scale… everything blends together so well that the campaign flies by and not a second of it was wasted. I had a blast from beginning to end, even as I had to retry over and over in some of the harder sections. (Especially the secret boss is a doozy, and though quite frustrating at first, beating it felt so good!) In any case, very glad I went back to Splatoon 2 after 3 to check this out, was absolutely worth it and I highly recommend.

this was absolutely wonderful. just a dlc but it could easily pass as a full game. completely different from anything done before in any splatoon game and it's beautiful. the story is amazing, the stages are well thought, the dialogues are funny and well written and the plot twists were wonderful. the gameplay is fun as well, it's long and you have many ways to customize your experience in order to play it however you please, and don't even get me started on the soundtrack..... i also particularly love the dark undertone that the story has and im just happy that this dlc exists (and sad that side order was a letdown)

من أفضل اعمال نينتندو يا رجل أنصح الكل يلعبها حتى لو ما تحب سبلاتون. اللعبة هذه روعة لتلك الدرجة

Can’t believe it’s been 6 years since I first played this. I said this back in 2018, and I’ll say it again now- one of the best DLC experiences I’ve had. Incredibly innovative not only in level design but the supplemental world and design created for it.

This is where the franchise has peaked for me (So far). Not only they nailed the vaporwave presentation but the overall progression, the interestingly unique and clever level design bundled with the story's exciting pacing and the jaw-droppingly awesome soundtrack , only to be wrapped up with the easy but exhilarating final boss.
To sum it up in one sentence: "Best 20€ I've ever spent on a DLC!"

It's at this point where I really fall off Splatoon as a series and just do not see eye to eye with popular opinion anymore. I'm absolutely in love with what this expansion presents itself as. Sploon's single player campaigns always left more to be desired. They were basically just shooter versions of Mario 3D world type game design with some decent boss fights at best. Base game 2 not growing from where 1 started at ALL felt aggressively lame in that regard. So here comes a very stylish expansion that seems to finally deliver the true single player splatoon we've all been itching for.....And then we get another batch of very basic floating platform levels with little to no challenge.....And this time there's not even cool boss fights to look forward to.

This bait and switched me so hard. I just want single player splatoon to drop the floating rectangle design dude, make some real locations, I want to see more of this world. Opening this expansion with a whole intro level and scenes that take place in an abandoned railroad was so sick. I absolutely love roaming around the train, and I'm obsessed with all the character designs they made for creatures taking the train with you. Characters that don't even have a single line of dialogue are given such striking designs. This is such a sick world and any glimpse we get into it is a reminder of why Splatoon got so popular to begin with. But then the actual levels start and you get NONE of that. They do such a good job nailing the aesthetic and world building but the second you take a step off the train you're in a lifeless, featureless, void of level design that's scientifically engineered to be vaguely engaging and nothing more. Just content slop for the content mill. You're not here to really get more out of this world, you're here for 80 levels that are slightly more gimmicky than the unmemorable husks of the last 2 campaigns. Very occasionally at best you'll have some decent gimmick level that stands out. Like painting a huge object, or breaking all the correct boxes. Stuff like that, I vibe with. Not exactly what I'd want out of this universe but if this is the route we're taking I'm a lot happier they're playing with the mechanics that make Splatoon unique, as opposed to shooting and platforming for shooting/platformings sake.

I just don't see what makes this THAT different than what we already got in the base game. It feels more like a proper sequel and if this is what we'd got in the base game I'd comfortably say it's an improvement over 1 in most cases besides bosses. Still leaves me wanting more but it's a big step in the right direction. But as a THIRD campaign this doesn't feel like a step in the right direction it feels like the last straw. The digital logs and ending were very enjoyable so at least we get to see more of some of the strongest characters in the series. But for a majority of the runtime, Pearl and Marina are given nothing interesting to say or do in the present. Cool backstory and cool finale. It's a shame their personalities weren't allowed to shine during gameplay where they're constantly talking, but never saying anything. It's all such frustratingly dry writing coming from characters that otherwise singlehandedly carried Splatoon 2 as a game for me.

There's really not much else to say either. For an "expansion" it's pretty small. There's this ominous buildup whenever you enter a level that has one of the 4 plot maguffins in in it, but you just grab them 10 seconds in and move on with no boss fights for some reason. They reuse bosses from the first game with some minor gimmick thrown on...There's a lot of target practice on grind rails I guess...Like whatever. There's a weird currency mechanic where you gotta pay to try levels and you get more rewarded to you for choosing harder guns for the challenge...But I really don't understand this whole system. It's like if they said "You need 50 coins to enter this level" in mario 3D world. Then 2 hours in they're still saying "You need 50 coins to enter this level" as you're sitting on 5,000 coins. Like yeah it charges you to retry but that's potentially punishing and would alienate players if it became a legitimate obstacle. Auto pilot platformer design Nintendo would never risk that ergo the levels are all baby easy. I'd much rather they removed the punishment for dying if it meant the designers were comfortable putting together anything genuinely challenging.

Hecc while I like the ending, the finale is practically more of an auto scroller "shoot the targets" mission than a boss fight. Ultimately it was just nice to be able to play as an Octoling in multiplayer after beating it. Added some much needed upgrades to character customization with that alone.

Sploon single player has never been great but they've never had to stand on their own like this before. This game presents itself as everything we all want but to me it just cemented the fact that Splatoon will never grow from this extremely safe and predictable formula. Base game being a bit rushed gave it somewhat of an excuse but a dedicated single player project being the same slop kills any interest going forward. The exciting imagery seen in the promotional art...Is the extent of said excitement. The idea that a single player Splatoon could genuinely be cool is used as set dressing, and kept far away from the actual meat of the experience. They're literally just using the idea that Splatoon doesn't have to suck as promotional material, with no plans to follow up on any of those concepts in any way.

I'd be curious if the campaigns of 1 and 2 were standalone experiences, what they'd be rated. 'Cuz this one being held up as peak splatoon feels like if New Super Mario Bros 1 and 2 got "meh" responses and the third got universal acclaim, like bro they're all the same game.

This DLC explores and expands on all the mechanics of Splatoon in a fun and challenging way.

The music in this is just so, so incredibly different, in a good way. I would do anything for Dedf1sh.

I always thought this was one of my favorite games, but i haven't played it since it came out so I wasn't confident saying that. Now I am.

All the levels are challenging in a fair way that I feel respects me as a player. Alterna had decent levels from what I remember but they all felt easily beatable by a child, kind of like a Mario game. Octo Expansion gives you the real shit. Levels with timers are usually strict as hell and getting to the goal in some levels is a legitimate challenge. It is worth noting though that no stage is completely backbreakingly difficult, this isn't some kaizo romhack combo meal supreme. Girl Power Station is quite a significant challenge though, and Inner Agent 3 is a damn good challenge.

Something I liked is how it cuts the shit. I honestly never liked the hub worlds. I liked going into levels. Alterna misses the point of the gameplay formula by having a hub, even if that one isn't as long. Octo Expansion sticks you on a train and you just do levels. It feels so good.

It's also important to note what it was like to play this when it first released. This was the first time we directly interacted with the dark side of Splatoon. This game isn't really like some gritty grimdark thing by any means, i'm an adult and this game is made for kids, but it is definitely more mature than previous games. I first played this as a teenager, and a teenager who was not crazy good at Splatoon. I actually DID think this game busted your balls a little with the difficulty. I thought the agent 3 fight in the story and the statue painting were actually quite hard.

I could write a lot more but I don't want to put up a massive wall of text that takes ten minutes to read. This is the best Splatoon campaigns have ever been, and although I hope this isn't true, is probably always gonna be the best.

I see why this is the benchmark for splatoon campaigns. the characterization, plot, and setting is interesting and compelling. the gameplay is well varied and challenging.

it's rare these days for a game to make me feel like I'm in it, exploring a fully realized environment, but this game elicits that feeling.

Yeah this is really dang good. Tons of variety in the levels, story is super weird (in a good way), characters are silly, music goes crazy. This rules.

Far better than Splatoon 2's base campaign with a more identifiable style, a welcome increase in challenge, and hugely enjoyable character and lore writing. It couldn't have been the base game's campaign due to its length, but I would have been more than happy if it was, honestly. This is how you do an expansion right.

i suck shit at this game but i must pull through... for my favorite lesbians.... pearlina........
