I desperately want to like this game a lot more than I do. The presentation is good and it overall feels pretty good to play. And I love that it exists at all, I'm begging for more licensed games. But it just feels like it's on autopilot. Collectathon elements are hugely downplayed here in favor of focusing on incredibly average platforming, and I really think that does this game no favors. BFBB was good because it leaned on its strengths most of the time, this instead hones in on every weakness more often than not. Levels are long and really straightforward so going back to 100% them is a chore. The writing is ok as far as modern spongebob goes, (Frankly better than BFBB's writing by a longshot, and they actually got Tom Clancy for Mr. Krabbs for once) And there was a few fun boss fights and highlights here and there. But big picture a lot of it is a lot more dull than it should be.

BFBB isn't beloved for its platforming prowess and variety of combat encounters, the refusal to just make a BK styled game in the modern era is just an act of self sabotage and I don't get it. It's serviceable and not entirely miserable if you're in the mood for something mindless and you're a fan of the series. But it doesn't go hard. They really got the iconic Band Geeks song "Sweet Victory" to drum up hype in the trailer, and then proceed to NOT play it until the credits. Bro play it during the final boss, where's the vision? It's not hard to go hard dude why do modern games not understand this? Play sweet victory during the final boss and the score goes up, it's that heckin easy, you have the song. Why everything gotta be so limp bro just go hard why is everything so afraid to go hard now? Losing my mind, it's so close just be heckin cool man what's this era's fascination with surface level callbacks combined with a strict wall saying we're not allowed to do anything with said callbacks?

Also this industry really do be so starved for ideas we've ended up with dodge rolls in heckin' Spongebob combat come on dude.

I guess I'll spoiler warning just 'cuz I mentioned it plays sweet victory even tho they used it in the trailer. But did they REALLY use it?

Strong back half, but doesn't really start with its best foot forward. It does introduces a traversal mechanics pretty late, i.e. the very last level. I get they want you to go back to each level, but "replay everything but this time with a couple extra goodies to pick up" is not compelling game design. Solid platformer, funny enough script, and good use of the IP. Battle for Bikini Bottom is still the stronger entry, though.

The best spongebob game that I have played by a mile - take the foundation of Battle for Bikini Bottom and put a multiverse and new ideas for a more linear yet expanded and refined platforming experience. I just had a ton of fun and coming from someone who doesn't have a lot of nostalgia, I genuinely think this is well worth playing.

Glad to see Battle for Bikini Bottom was getting a spin-off, but alas I think the hype for it got purple lamp confused that BfBB was a product of its time with lots of nostalgic value for fans and this game adds very little to the experience besides feeling like DLC foe BfBB.

It's okay. My problems with this game is levels felt linear compared to Battle for Bikini Bottom. This along with Spongebob only being the playable characters and not liking the other powerups made this an okay game.

the rehydrated engine looks fantastic but feels so stiff to play :(

I honestly didn’t think you could compete with Battle for Bikini Bottom but I was wrong. More levels, different environments, more fighting and movement mechanics. Sucks you can’t play as Patrick or Sandy though. Battle for Bikini Bottom is still GOATED with the sauce. This game really makes me feel like I live in a pineapple under the sea.

Cosmic Shake was a fantastic game. while it wasn't as long as it's predecessor, BfBB, I still greatly enjoyed my time with this game. the levels were all unique and memorable, while the bossfights were fun for the most part. the new gameplay mechanics were fun, and the humour in this game nearly always hit. a must play for SpongeBob fans.

Fun with knowledge of the series however does feature bland gameplay. I understand why because it's a children's game but unless you're a fan I can't reccomend it. But if you are. I do.

A straight-forward platformer compared to Battle for Bikini Bottom. The Cosmic Shake is the long-awaited sequel I have wanted. A lot more character, animations, and creativity was added. While there were less levels than BfBB, they took original levels and added an extra spin to them. Music from the show was also included in the game and more references from the show. It is the sequel I have been wanting, but it's also a polished game than the remaster a couple of years ago

très bon platformer avec beaucoup de diversité dans les environnements.

It was a pretty fun game to play though it felt like some more touch-ups would've been nice.
I like the spongeboy :)

After the excellent Spongebob remake, the game is rather "EHHHH". It gets better as the stages progress, but can't keep up with Battle of Bikini bottom in many aspects.

If you enjoyed Battle for Bikini Bottom and simply want more of the same, then this games perfect for you. This game doesn't really innovate much on it's predecessor. Lacked polish in some areas. If you weren't too keen on the first game then skip this one.

got the plat for this and it genuinly improved my experience with the game. better than BFBB for sure and a worthwhile game to get when its on sale. just classic 3d platforming fun

While the premise of multiverses has recently become more common in mainstream pop culture, I find that it offers a lot of fun opportunities for storytelling and aesthetic variety.
And this game nails that latter aspect, as the levels you get to explore are so varied and visually interesting and pleasing that I think it provides an excellent backdrop for this game.
The gameplay is very much a PS2 esc platformer, which is not a bad thing, but with the added polish and honing in on having SpongeBob be the only character you play as, I’m willing to say this game is better than Battle for Bikini Bottom.
It just nails what it’s going for, and while the writing isn’t crème of the crop, the characters are entertaining and well executed overall and you really get sense that this game was a labor of love.

Love the many references. It's the definition of Fan support and I Love that shit.
Liked that there are still games being made in this style. Miss them.

But I think that the collectibles are the biggest letdown of this game. I was hoping for a big range of colletibles, cause these worlds are just so beautiful and games like this are perfect for collecting.
It's the best part about it. It's just very dissappointing to see, that this part is the most bare bones.

The rest is really fun. Game is just pure joy and easy fun.

I thought it was just ok. Battle for Bikini Bottom is miles better, this lacked so much of the charm it had.
Maybe it's me being much older now and not having watched the show since season 5, but the humor feels a lot more forced too. Patrick was more annoying than funny in this game...
But it's still a Spongebob game, and with the BfBB engine no less, so I had fun with it.

This game was THQ Nordic's attempt to make a new game in the same vein as Battle for Bikini Bottom. Apparently the remaster of BFB did well enough that Cosmic Shake got greenlit. And I did enjoy Cosmic Shake as a big BFB enjoyer, but eh... it just lacks a lot of heart the original had. SpongeBob is the only playable character this time around, and while the world design is cool, the game is much more condensed since it doesn't have the progression of the Spatulas that BFB has.

It almost feels like THQ Nordic got too excited to make a new BFB spiritual successor that they didn't stop to think about what made BFB so charming. And as a result, they made a solid game, but one that pales in comparison. Overall, good game, but disappointing and has plenty of wasted potential should they have spent more time with it.

God, am I getting this nuanced talking about a SpongeBob game?

Score: 75

Everything in this game is great except for the plot and the fact that you can only play as SpongeBob, not his friends. I'm not a huge fan of the enemies — evil "jelly fish" were a bit weird, too

expected a bit more out of this game after the success of the Battle For Bikini Bottom remake. In comparison to that game, Cosmic Shake doesn't have the same quality level design and mission that made Battle For Bikini Bottom so good. The game's linear design made most missions a chore to get through and the missions were mostly forgettable.

Encore une blague et je te crève Patrick (le ballon).

There's so much to say with this game. The pros are the developers did alot of correct Spongebob references to certain episodes from newer and older seasons, the cutscene animations are very expressive, and the music is pretty catchy.

The gameplay itself is very simple platforming and good for people who don't play platformers or good for children and families to play. You learn a new ability by going through each level and it makes platforming very interesting. The downside to this is the game never fully uses these abilities to its full potential. The enemies have cool designs, but the majority of them you can just do basic attacks to defeat them. The main collectables in the game are jelly and doubloons. There are set amount of doubloons in each level, but jelly will respawn an unlimited amount if you die or restart the level. Doubloons just unlock more costumes in the costume shop and you buy them with jellies. There's also other mini side quests where you collect various things for certain characters. Nice if you want to 100% the game. The downside to all of this is if you aren't going to 100% the game, then you have no incentive to collect anything and can run past the majority of the enemies. The boss fights aren't even really fights. You mostly wreck parts of the level to "fight" them. It takes you out of the game and makes it feel like an extention of the level, not like a boss fight at all.

I was playing this on PS4, so I don't know if anyone else has these issues. First of all the audio for cutscenes never match the cutscene. It's either off by 8 seconds or characters will repeat the same sentence over and over or the audio just cuts out entirely. This is also the same within levels. The music within levels will just cut out for the entire level most of the time. Plus, the death animations almost never play out. I've fallen through the bottom of the map multiple times, enemies sometimes never attack, and collectables sometimes never can be collected. Also, the game would freeze for me multiple times during cutscenes and gameplay.

Boss Fight Gripe: (this is where the spoiler is, incase you care about spoilers for a Spongebob game lol): The last boss fight is kindof unfair. You fight Squidward but hes transformed into a giant squid and his tenticles will hurt you or make projectiles that hurt you. These are easy to dodge. But then the main villian of the game is shooting harmful jelly at you, you have to dodge enemies and suction them up with the reef blower so you can attack the villian. Sounds ok enough, but you get stunned by the enemies for about 4 seconds and the knockback from getting hit by everything else will literally trap you in an endless loop of pain and you will die instantly. I got lucky on my 4th try, but still almost died and it felt like the game was completely unfair.

I know this is a licensed game, but there are great licensed games out there. This is an average game and the story is nice. I'm a very long time Spongebob fan and have watched this show since day 1 and even that can't save this game from ultimately being mediocre.

Saving Bikini Bottom, one hapless soul at a time.

(Here is my original review of the game back when I played it on PS4: https://www.backloggd.com/u/Shamaboy11/review/923206/)

Having played so many great games this year and my honeymoon phase being gone. I was concerned that The Cosmic Shake would fall behind so hard, but having replayed the game fully with the recent native PS5 version this week.

I'm happy to say that the game outside of tedious 100% completion & the finale feeling so anticlimactic is still a delightful 3D platformer that is a love letter to the Spongebob franchise without feeling like a cash grab.

It's also nice to play this at smooth 60fps, fast loading times, and the photo mode while being basic was fun to use to take snapshots of my journey through the creative themes and did make the costumes feel a bit more rewarding to unlock.

Once again, if you are a Spongebob fan & look for a very fun 3D platformer. This is an easy recommendation especially costing at a budgeted price.

SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake pulled a Sonic Superstars for me... just nowhere near as severe.

First off, let me get the positives out of the way. Firstly, and the most obvious/apparent is that the graphic's and overall presentation are a HUGE step up from BFBB Rehydrated. The game has decent lighting, textures and the character models actually have good animations and don't look completely wooden. Another positive is the voice acting. To my knowledge, all the cast members of the show reprise their roles here and they all do a stellar job as usual and did the best with what they could do with the corny ass script they were given. The combat is incredibly simplistic but can be fun if you're fighting hoards of base level goons at a time. Sometimes I just like to shut my brain off and kick some ass don't judge me lmao.

Now for the negatives. Now obviously I don't expect the world from a licensed game let alone a SpongeBob one. But not only is the level design so simple that even calling it "simple" in the first place is a massive understatement, but like Sonic Superstars, levels go on for way too fucking long. If you've played other licensed games like Simpsons Hit and Run, you'd know how missions consist of nothing but a long lined string of fetch quests that ultimately means nothing in the game's story. Same deal here. But the absolute biggest sin of this game and what made it such a huge disappointment... is that this game is just one giant asset flip of BFBB. I started to have my suspicions about it when I was playing through Wild West Jellyfish Fields but it didn't become blatantly obvious until Karate Downtown Bikini Bottom (which is the worst fucking stage in the whole game).

I have some other criticisms here and there but I think I made my point. All in all; this game is inoffensive enough and if you have little kids who like SpongeBob or if you yourself are a fan I can say this game is harmless enough to try out. But if you're not a fan of the source material, you're just left with an incredibly basic, tedious 3D platformer. 5/10. It's okay.
