it's been a while since i've played an rpg that was really satisfying gameplay wise, not too much of a breeze, but not level grindy or overly punishing, i really loved the star power and spellbook mechanics even if they're simple ones. it really helped boost a game that i was loving purely for the story and characters

Super cute game with a good story and fun combat.

This game is a complete delight from start to finish. Very funny, cute, and charming, it's a game where saying good-bye to the cast of characters hurts a little. Utterly heartfelt and genuine, and in general just a really cool display of what can be done with RPGmaker as an engine.

It lasts just as long as it needs to, and has so much polish the whole way through, it's really inspirational how this was a (mostly) one-person project. Stellar.

NEED to finish. didn't play it enough

I’ve never been a lesbian, nor have I been an animal, and a lesbian animal? Not even once. But video games allow us to experience different lives so I played Super Lesbian Animal RPG.

This is a turn-based RPG that feels inspired by the breadth of the Mario outings in the genre with SLARPG’s interlinking world in which character abilities are necessary to surpass some obstacles. It’s simple but it brings an interactive element that reminds me of Paper Mario or Mario & Luigi. It helps that the game’s aesthetics and music are realized in a way that a Nintendo game would do. These environments and characters are delightful to look at it and music is top-notch.

Overall, though, I liked this game but did not love it and I think that’s because I have trouble with the writing and storytelling. I didn’t resonate with Melody’s lack of confidence because I didn’t think there enough drama to be a compelling character arc. I also take issue with the scale of the main conflict compared to the smallness of the game world. There was a disconnect there.

Even if I don’t think it comes together well, I appreciate this game for having moments of emotional harshness because I’ve played a lot of indie games that felt afraid to hurt its characters. Characterization was strong in which most characters had a distinct personality that carries in all their interactions. There were also a lot of good individual moments in the writing and in general.

This is a game with a lot of ideas on display– most of them manifesting as jokes like a recurring enemy you can encounter in battles later on being an NPC in town. There’s a lot of neat tricks and this short game is packed with them which compensates for the game’s typical character building and combat, which is standard turn-based fare.

This game didn’t blow me away, but it did teach me a lot. It taught me that if, one day, I woke up as a lesbian animal maybe… I’d survive.

friend reccomended it to me and i have to get back to playing it someday :agony:

It's pretty well made. Would kiss my animal girlfriend again.

It's a 2D top-down indie game about going around and having feelings and relationship drama and stuff PSYCHE IT'S ALSO A MECHANICALLY RICH, ENGAGING JAPANESE-STYLE ROLEPLAYING GAME. It's both! Often you just get one or the other but this game is BOTH and that's great.

got everything the title said and then some!

real talk tho, the love and passion poured into this game exudes from every avenue. I do think you can get a touch overpowered near the late game to the point where even the optional harder challenges arent that difficult, but its a wonderful game and another great addition to what people can achieve with RPG Maker

they are so gay, good for them good for them <3

I've been really surprised with the quality of this game, I expected to find a niche RPG, and what I've played turned out to be one of my best gaming experiences of this year so far.

This game has nothing to envy of juggernauts of the indie RPG genre like Undertale, being at the same level than the most known entries, it has a really good humour, pacing, art-style and secondary content, being all of it there for a reason and not for padding reasons, in those regards, I enjoyed more this game than a lot of triple A RPGs, where they often have more quantity than quality on their gameplay.

I feel heartened in the knowledge that the people I have added on Steam that I've not talked to since I was 14 now know that I'm a gay furry

What I expected to make me roll my eyes with honeymoon identity discovering slop that a lot of queer media seems to have a problem with, ended up just delighting me with a fun, humorous love letter to old-school RPGs that can manage to have the LGBT side as a major theme, without making it just about the only thing that matters.

this is one of my favorite rpgs in the past couple of years the characters are all full of whimsy and theyre all lesbian which is cool.

Strongest post-completion depression I've ever felt

I’m putting down Super Lesbian Animal RPG after act 3 (out of I believe 4). It’s an amazing game from what I’ve played with some very fun, heartfelt and funny writing, though the combat starts to wear on me after a bit. They do what they can, but I feel it’s a limitation of the RPGM engine.

stellar rpg, best i've played in recent memory

well crafted gameplay (albeit on the easy side), killer gags, art and music that exudes charm, and writing that 9 times out of 10 felt natural and engaging. builds off the classic rpg experience with a few bright ideas of its own and a playful energy that i really enjoyed.

i really oughta try earthbound if its anything like slarpg. (but earthbound doesnt have furries so its clear which game is superior)

I have been following solo game dev Bobby Schroeder for several years now through her personal and Sonic-related blogs on Tumblr.com, and I was immensely excited at the prospect of the openly, aggressively queer turn-based RPG that she was developing. Unfortunately, when the game finally came out I did not have a keyboard with arrow keys, and could not play the game. Now, I have finished the game much later than intended and can finally talk about it.

Perhaps no other game is as open about its contents as Super Lesbian Animal RPG< a game declaring itself right on the tin as being a roleplaying game about lesbian furries, and it does not disappoint. Within the narrative are four major lesbian romances, one of which appears to be optional (via Clair’s sidequest near the end of the game). Each one focuses on one of the four main party members, Melody (the foxgirl protagonist and party healer), Allison (the punky DPS bunny), Clair (the chaotic messy wizard cow), and Jodie (the tiger tank). Each character is well-developed, and their romances are as sappy and earnest as one could hope. Each character’s motivations and personalities are fully laid out and eventually pulls a Chrono Trigger by opening up several character-specific side-quests in the endgame. This is among a character development strategy that I love whenever it appears–from Chrono Trigger to Mass Effect 2, giving optional character quests is an excellent way to highlight and develop that party member outside the main cast.

Each NPC stands out in my mind and breathes life into the Sapphire Isles. And for as delightful as the colorful cast of furries are (Pepper, the retired Dark Lord’s daughter, is a favorite) each oozes personality via charming portraits with multiple expressions each; the combat is just as good as the story and world. Taking place in a first-person perspective turn-based combat (it’s an RPG Maker game obviously) each party member has a specific class, with customization coming from equipable spellbooks that offer specific abilities to each character. While the game is extremely linear in terms of progression, the actual challenges of combat are tailored to each character’s specialization. Combined with solid pacing that never spends too much time in one area, SLARPG (as it’s been called by Schroeder) makes for a fantastic time, so long as you have arrow keys.

funnily enough i am also coincidentally a super lesbian animal so this game is kind of designed for me in a way

Where it Shines:
Gay - 10/10
Furry - 10/10
Cute - 10/10

The Good:
This game is just so good. It's super gay, and there are almost zero CIS/HET/Allo/Allistic/males/etc type characters in it. It's full of LGBTQ+ themes and it's just super cute and nice. It's not about Lesbians for some male fantasy, it's about lesbians being lesbians. Probably one of the best LGBTQ+ games ever made.

The Bad:
It's very bare bones in terms of gameplay. It's a basic JRPG format, and very "90's flash game" vibes for the combat system. But it does have tons of accessibility options to mitigate some of the dullness of it and you really should be playing this to get to know the characters and story anyway, not the combat. This isn't FF Tactics.

Summary:
If playing violent video games doesn't make you into a killer, then why did playing SLARPG make me into a queer furry????

****note on my ratings:
half ⭐: hot trash garbage
⭐: below average, needs work
⭐⭐: average
⭐⭐⭐: pretty good
⭐⭐⭐⭐: excellent
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐: all time favourite
half star ratings between those mean it's slightly better or worse than stated in this list.

Those animals sure were lesbian!!

The game is really good. I only know the words for explaining gameplay, and the gameplay was great too, but the main thing is everything else.
This review sucks. Just go and play the game. Then listen to the OST, the OST is an absolute banger.

Out of basically nowhere this has handily become both (1) one of my favorite Mother-inspired indie RPGs and (2) one of my favorite "Save The World"-y JRPGs probably ever?

I mean, granted--I am a gay furry who tends to play and like a lot of these games (for reference, Mother 3, Undertale, and Omori are all in my top 10 lol), I am pretty much the exact target demographic here, but still, wow.

Insanely polished, amazing art direction and music, and some really heartfelt writing that's strong enough to both be sweet AND super emotionally real and poignant at the same time (reminded me a lot of Chicory, which is also one of my favorites). The battle mechanics here are pretty great too--tons of synergies to experiment with and options to try, which is something most other Mother-inspired indies tend to not really put any focus into. You can get a little OP by the end but that's a small nitpick to have when you can just run past enemies for a little while if you're feeling a bit too powerful.

Pretty much a hands-down recommendation for anyone even remotely interested. If you play a lot of Mother-inspired indies and/or are queer and/or a furry, you really owe it to yourself to give this one a go.

(Also, do the side content, it's just as good as the main questline is.)

I waited so long for this then didn't play it for a long time after buying lol. But it's worth the time spent waiting

A very joyful experience. It tells a cute story with some solid classic turn based rpg mechanics but with a greater than average focus on the defense options. It could use some dynamism in the combat, but it uses the constraints of a traditional turn based rpg well.

A relatable and an acceptable level of #relatable group of characters that were all as memorable as each other, even with small side npcs. Lovely art and fun themed attacks and some synergies involved therein. I liked some of the jokes throughout, but I was surprised it was a little light on em from what I expected. It didn't hurt for it, as it became a more sincere story told well. I think some of the plot beats were a little basic but if I, a minor rpg nerd, wouldn't toss in some fun tropes I'd be lying to myself.

I hope this can get the needed momentum and see Ponett develop further stuff in the future.

Love that this is the other game spawned from mlp but especially that this just became a furries game

Wow! I love when queerness means nothing!

Incredible characters, art, story, music, dialogue, everything...
...Except the combat.

Combat is.. terrible. It's painfully boring, takes forever, and is poorly balanced to boot (there's a very obvious/powerful build and you're not very rewarded for switching it up.. sometimes even punished for it). Thankfully there's an option to turn down the difficulty significantly to be able to focus on the rest of the game without as much disruption.

I get that's mostly a symptom of being made in RPGmaker, but that's the reason for a 4.5/5 rather than full 5/5.

The rest of the game though? What a delight.
Characters I couldn't help but obsess over, absolutely gorgeous art, solid story, and OST so good I bought it and the demo on Bandcamp as soon as I finished the game.

If I had a nickel for every 2013 MLP fangame which slowly morphed into it's own project gaining a cult following with me being apart of after following the development in my teens, I'd have two whole nickels, which isn't that impressive, but is a funny circumstance anyway.

i love gay people i love gay people i love gay people i love gay people

At first I thought my life was a Super Lesbian Animal Tragedy, now I realize it's a Super Lesbian Animal Comedy
