Fun mystery story about a bunch of nasty Britishers with some beautiful art and great presentation.

I've been itching for a mystery game like this since I finished Obra Dinn, and The Case of the Golden Idol certainly scratched that itch.
I plowed through this game with a couple of friends, and sharing the aha-moments once all the pieces were starting to fall into place was fantastic. A large part of the mysteries can be solved with enough trial and error, but we tried to challenge ourselves by only placing names that we were 90% sure were going in the right spot.
Looking forward to the sequel!

This game lived in my head rent-free after i just started chapter 11 so I accidentally solved the entire case at 2 am and physically sat up going ''OH SHIT'' when i Realized. Game good

These games surprised me with how nice the art and mystery is, I assumed there would be some moon logic but surprisingly almost everything was clear if you paid attention and really examined all the clues.

I just did not find anything interesting in this narratively or mechanically. Finding the clues is largely pointless, the UI is not at all conducive for piecing clues together, clues can too often rely on guesswork or visual similarities between crude lo-fi drawings, and the narrative is too banal and messy and disjointed to be helpful piecing any clues together - or vice versa,

An unique puzzle game where the player must investigate a murder scene or diorama . As a puzzle genre fan, I strangely did not vibe with this as it feels less detective work and more fill in the blank. It has its merits of surprises such as false leads but I did not get that aha factor that I look for. Perhaps it was not that difficult or did not feel I truly solved it on my own. For the story though, I do not truly think this is a mystery but more like a series of events with the idol as a key object. The twist though was okay but I did not like how it required guesswork in the last level to figure out the first part. This is still an indie gem worthy of recommendation and do play it with a mouse rather than a controller.

While it's not simply a murder mystery, Golden Idol draws a still scene for you to parse, whether it's a murder or a disappearance and so on. Instead of ruffling the scene for clues to add to a list, you earn words to use on a mad-libs type scroll to make sense of assailants, objects, or actions.

I dig the art even if it shows its seams at times, the only thing that felt especially jarring is the occasional comic style cutscenes between some chapters. Being pre-rendered it strips away the charm of the art and introduces laughably bad speech boxes that look amateurish at best.

Puzzle design is fun and the story itself interested to progress with, but some level had inconsistently long leaps of logic between the solving steps that it turns into guesswork with the scroll. Since it gives a special warning when you've got two or fewer mistakes, meaning you can keep swapping pieces while using confirmed pieces as a control group. I can't describe this as me spoiling my fun, since most of those instances were when I found the solution but was struggling with composition of the pieces.
I did like how it lets you do some minigame style puzzles to unlock hints, I only needed to use it once, but it's a nice idea of breaking the thinking tedium and jog your mind elsewhere. As a fun way to re-tread the events, you can also check previous chapters and solutions to eliminate some of the guesswork for scrolls, the game even prompts you to do so at the final chapter.
Music was really nice and fitting though, especially the first expansion. It was standout kind of good.

The first expansion; the spider of Lanka is a prequel to the events of the game. Animation is improved however the scenario script was too convoluted for my tastes. I spent more time switching pieces than I did exploring the scenes.
The second expansion is a continuation that bookends exactly where the base game begins, more of the same, don't have much to say.

It does have apparent flaws, but it's a good detective puzzler with a nice story to follow.

This game's biggest achievement for me was maintaining a sense of mystery throught, even as it throws you right into the midst of the violent crimes being committed! It's such a unique approach for a murder mystery game. Each clue was very satisfying to piece together to understand the bigger picture. And that art style man... crunchy in the best possible way! I had a great time!

Really neat little game, close to obra dinn but much more contained.
Art style is probably not for everybody, and a couple mysteries are a little too complicated you may end up brute forcing a little.

DLC was good too, first one pretty tough, second one with a little gimmick to add some layering

Pep's Detective Deep Dive - Game 6
This was... something different. Rather than the usual "investigating a murder after the fact" murder mystery, Case Of The Golden Idol presents a static scene to you, and it's up to you to point-and-click your way to the truth of what exactly is going on in the story.

Clicking highlighted areas of interest presents you with a series of words, and you use these words to fill in the gaps of an incomplete "scroll", giving you the story. Seems simple at first, but as the game progresses it can get fiendishly difficult as the story spirals and some parts left me genuinely stumped. If you're really struggling there's a hint system available, but I never used it.

The only real thing stopping me from giving this a higher mark is that the story kind of fizzles out by the end, and I was left slightly let down by it. However, there's a 1970s-set sequel on the way so I'll be looking into that.

An interesting concept done very well, I definitely recommend this if you're looking for a different kind of mystery game.

Played on Steam Deck. Cool idea, but a bit tedious trying to figure out the exact way the game wants you to fill in the words.

Really enjoyable detective game, with a story that slowly pieces itself together. Difficulty was pretty manageable for me for the most part, although I did admittedly struggle quite a bit on the last few cases, and ESPECIALLY on some of the DLC cases. I would still strongly recommend playing the DLCs, as they round out the main story in a really nice way.

Excellent mystery solving game. A bit futzy at times but worth it

I voted for Lazarus Herst. What's your excuse?

Wow! I honestly did not expect to like this game this much. I am a fan of games like Return of Obra Dinn, but initially found the artstyle a bit too harsh for my tastes, and the more-traditional point and click style of interaction was also not that appealing to me.

I have to say I was wrong to assume the game was boring - it is a nicely crafted detective adventure that takes you through a chronological journey that slowly, but surely becomes more and more evil. Impressive and very fun!

Visually appealing and good narrative.
Unfortunately due to how clues are pieced together can rely too much on guesswork.
A logbook that retains clues from all cases would also be appreciated as some elements return in future cases and the only way to relearn them is to go back to already completed cases.

dark, creepy, grimy, and weird. evokes a 90s adventure game without making me actually play a 90s adventure game.
and we love to see a great game like this made in the godot engine don't we folks!

A wonderful, intriguing game that glued me to the screen. If you like games like Obra Dinn and/or even remotely enjoy solving mysteries, this is an absolute blast to play. The DLCs are great, too.

actually a horror game with a math jumpscare but i survived

Wonderful detective game that fuses point-and-click with mad libs to deliver brain scrunching puzzles and maddening twists.

What I liked about this game, far more than its contemporaries, is that all of the information I needed to track to solve a puzzle was presented on the screen in front of me. I think I would have enjoyed Obra Dinn or Outer Wilds more if I'd kept a journal, whereas Golden Idol puts all the potential solutions right there at the bottom and says "Complete this jigsaw"

I completed it together with my girlfriend, and perhaps the best recommendation is that she was very engaged in solving the puzzles. Some were (in my opinion) damn difficult, but never to the point of being annoying. If someone is missing a game like Return of the Obra Dinn, I think they won't be disappointed by choosing this one.

Wow, another special game. Absolutely loved this. Aside from a few harsh endgame spikes in the DLC, the way this detective game is paced and weaves in knowledge you gain as you go through cases is wonderful. A must play.

Complexity of puzzles became overwhelming in the last few cases. The interface isn’t well adapted to the Switch either.

Lazarus Herst? More like Lazarus worst

Great artistic design a d also gameplay; simple but very challenging. I need more like this

The DLC is still kicking my ass, but by the time I rolled credit on the main game, it got me feeling proud of myself and kept making me think about its world.
