Recently bought this game and have been playing it with my sister. It's a real trip and gets really fucking dark at times

Edit: Maybe I'm full of shit. I want to play more of this now..

I liked dressing up my dog and the tonal clash of the happy Wii dog graphics and the heavy illness-focused slice of life story. Actually even sniffing around for new items was kinda fun. But the way the two fit together makes them both mutually feel heavier, and there's not really any substance to the sniffing out of items. I was kind of impressed they would put this story in a kids' game: by all means kids' games Should be about these things! But the gameplay otherwise was kind of infantilely simple.

my beautiful sweet summer child the first real video game i ever played it will always be PEAK!

surprisingly good game. Everything is adorable, i loved searching for fish and bugs, and the story made me feel good. my gf’s childhood game completed

Krystelle said that this is the best game ever made. While it may not be true it is still a bit charming. The gameplay really is just fetch quests appropriately speaking, however the game does make a lot of filler excuses for some reason so the momentum of the game does like to drag given the premise of the story. Some mini games help break the variety up but I do feel like they come way too late. It does run at 60 the art is cute enough and the music can be catchy. Otherwise it's not a game I really recommend beating but it can be a title to turn your mind of to. There is a lot of dog types at least so it does get a bonus there.

Maybe it's just nostalgia, but man I can't help but look back upon this game with love. I spent so many hours on this game. Whether it be exploring the surprisingly vast and colorful world, or interacting with all the dogs around the island. The sniffing system to find and dig up items. Finding new creatures. This game still sticks with me years later and I really want to replay it someday.

I played this recently because I grew up on Petz Dogz 2 and Petz Catz 2. Was definitely super fun to play a game of the same style and caliber but I do stand by the fact PD2/PC2 are better games overall. They shouldn't have robbed the beetles from us though... and oh how I wish PD2/PC2 had a vocal track </3

it really was a dog island! the soccer mini game made me mad

This game is actually really good... who would have thought a game commissioned by a brand about dogs where you play as dogs in their style would have you fighting ancient T-Rex', going on dates (this was really weird), and exploring booby trapped ancient tombs ala Indiana Jones.

This game is somehow filled with intense emotion and somewhat serious topics for a game that you'd look at and think was made for very young children. Everything is done in a way that gives it enough nuance to feel genuinely emotional but not so much that it would come across as maybe too serious? Whimsy is a word I would use to describe this game. Emotional and whimsical. A game about tiny dogs with big fuckin heads.

I feel like the game hit the wayside with it's characters. They do take the time to actually give some of these funny dogs characters and personalities but there are a lot of characters in this game that just kinda sit around and do nothing. I guess this game is pretty much an RPG so it's not that weird but the fact that they're all just dogs that, well, look like normal dogs, they don't really stand out against each other. Except for the slightly racist Chinese stereotype dogs, you'll never forget them. The music in this game is also very good. Very peaceful acoustics that will probably stick to my mind as one of the better soundtracks I've heard in a game. This composer has never done anything else besides this and some weird Disney thing who cares somebody hire this woman please.

This game is... fun. It's very simple, it's very relaxing, and it goes places you wouldn't expect for a game about tiny dogs with big heads. It even does a lot visually that's very cool! This game is very pleasing to the eye, I mean it's a wii game it doesn't have a whole lot going on but it has pretty colors oooh

Everything about this game is just lovely except the part where they force you to date a dog for no reason and it has no bearings on anything that happens in the game ever and the dog you are forced to date never even acknowledges that it happened??? It's really weird and it made me uncomfortable sorry...

Play this game if you're super smart and are a good person! please buy me the bulldog plush

EDIT: Just saw the Japanese box art if someone has a list of boxarts that got fucked up overseas add this one please

This is where Wes Anderson got the idea.

this game is my entire personality

somehow the saddest game you can imagine and the theme song still makes both my younger sister and I unreasonably sad

It was cute before it stopped working lol

Yoko Taro killed my dad after he played this game

i miss the days where i would play this after school

it's a great JRPG with a story and mechanics that goes weird from start to the end. you'll be hit with emotions and all the usual shit. this could be what neon genesis evangelion to children like me who played it for the first time.

this cover was such a lie to me as a child. you got a name that says THE DOG ISLAND with a happy dog except it starts out so devastating for little young me back then. in a way i don't have any regrets starting it up, had no idea what i was going to go through.

i was severely depressed throughout this game's story and got diagnosed with depression years after release of this game.

Really is a 7/10 but it's a 10/10 in my heart so that averages out to a weighted 4 stars. Worth it for Dr. Potan alone.

I am not unbiased. This game is my love, my baby. I ADORED it as a kid, and I still find it fun to play from time to time. If you're a fan of Petz Dogz 2, try this out.

surprisingly good for a nintendogs like game

I can't really explain why I chose to play this game today, but I actually enjoyed it for what it is: a children's game about cute talking dogs.

I liked the variety of dog types/breeds. I don't know how this game compares to similar ones, but there were 48 dog breeds to choose for your playable character, and there were different color choices for each breed. I don't know if there's an official association, but the models in this game reminded me of some stuffed animals I had when I was a kid. I think that's why I was so charmed by this game.

One thing that surprised me was how dark the story was. I only played for about an hour, but the premise is that your little sibling is sick, and your father seemingly disappeared/died in search of a cure. His condition worsened, and you, a CHILD, must sail to a dangerous island to search for a doctor and plead for him to sail back and treat him. It's not actually presented as drearily as I described (it actually has a very cute aesthetic), but man this game was a doozy for the get-go.

I like the barking/howling mechanic. Usually, you use the X button to talk to other dogs. If you're just roaming around, tapping the X button lets you bark, and holding X down makes you howl. I don't know if this is useful at any point or if it's just meant to be cute, but I like it.

Overall, this game is good if you're a child or an adult who will play anything. It's cute and it's easy. I doubt I'll continue this game, but who knows.

Cute game but essentially the same gameplay as the second one, which is better in every way. So. Just play Petz Dogz 2

when i was a young lad i was so badly fixated on this game and i made a little paper cutout of petasi and i would take him everywhere with me. one day i lost him and i cried so hard and my mom told me to just make another one. i made another one out of graph paper but the original one magically turned up again a few days later. anyways i don't know where either of them went it's been over 10 years they've both most likely been lost to the void. the game itself is surprisingly good for what it is by the way.

only real gamers played this game and had a crisis about the baby sister

there's a lot of heart put into this. there's also a lot of heavy themes here that i would've never expected to see here... this game tackles things like death and terminal illness in a very mature way which is admirable. and many residents of dog island have a surprising amount of character depth. dr. potan and francis especially

they didn't have to put this much care into the world but it makes this game feel kind of special. i think it holds up. also i am a sniff master now

A game from my childhood that I hold dear to my heart. Despite the surprisingly grim story that the beginning sets up, it's still one hell of a journey that a young pup from the city takes to find a cure for their chronically ill sibling. It's a story about love and gratitude, forming new bonds and making the world better for everyone. It's all that good sappy kids stuff where friendship is literal magic and completely ignoring that wild animals can and will kill you. Y'know, for kids!

Poor joke aside, it's a lovely adventure full of doggy wonder where you can explore the world, put in the work to craft clothes for your dog, actively drink sea water, and wear a stupid fuckin apple hat that's bigger than your head as a reward for completing a food collection. Not to mention the ability to catch bugs and fish like it's animal crossing. You can see why I loved it as a little kid.

If you think my look on it has changed now that I'm technically an adult you're wrong. It's a silly dog game with a linear story that makes me feel good about helping people and also gives me the good head feelings by allowing me to do whatever the fuck I want like fishing and dressing my dog in cute outfits. Good game, would recommend for a good time.

Baby's first Japanese Action RPG.

This is also going on my list of children's games with a absolutely malevolent design decision with the losing all items on death.
