Never thought I'd get as hooked as I did with this, but I genuinely enjoyed this game. Story was whatevers, better than BL1 but that's not saying much. For all the hate I remember this game getting back in 2012, especially for the humor, I got some legit chuckles and a few laughs out of this. Most of all, I really got hooked with the game's loot and leveling up my character through the various skill trees, up until UVHM. Lost interest once I realized how much grinding and farming would be needed to continue in UVHM.
I can't in any good faith really call this a bad game. It's certainly not a GOOD game. There's a lot of heart and soul put into the nooks and crannies, from Handsome Jack's great delivery, some of the interesting build variety choices, some of the speedtech, some really good abilities, some fun satisfying moments with the gunplay.
But like, on top of all of that is a whole fat load of garbage. There's a ridiculous amount of grind, a shitton of terrible writing, a whole lot of fluff and fucking about. I don't understand WHY it's a loot shooter, it doesn't really ever meet that goal of being one. I'm not really a big fan of diablo but there was more concise design choices for why that game is loot-ran, where loot here is a lot of fluff shit.
There's a good FPS here, it's just under a whole lot of gearbox shit. I do fully understand the appeal of why people play this game as much as they do, in fact in some ways the co-op play of it is recommendable on its own in the way most co-op anything is, but even still I can't in any faith keep playing this game past a few hours because it just numbs my mind. I don't think I'm ever really going to grasp the full appeal of this, but I guess I should be glad that people find fun in this game because there's never anything wrong with that.

While this is one of my favorite games, it's easy to tell there are flaws in the game. Clever writing, crazy guns, expansive lore, vibrant performances and delivery, and memorable moments really breathe life into the world more than the first game. However, there are several points in the main story where you feel like you are just plowing to get through. The pacing may fluctuate throughout the game, but it's still thoroughly enjoyable and easily the best entry in the Borderlands franchise.
The game isn't too bad fundamentally. Shooting is okay, story is fine, characters are alright. But the game expects you to play over and over again. The jokes that were old first time you heard them become unbearable. Having to fight the same enemy fifty times to get a legendary isn't fun. Bosses (excluding raid bosses) are ridiculously easy. OP levels is just braindead difficulty increasement of "lets just increase the stats". UVHM actually has a good difficulty jump tho. Play it once and put it down, you gain nothing from new game plus apart from better gear which you probably won't even end up using because you got bored
Honestly - my least favorite Borderlands.
The gunplay doesn't improve much from the first game, the characters are unbearable, and the story - forgettable. The biggest improvement over BL1 to me is the environments. They are more varied and more fun to explore.
The core to Borderlands is always fun but the wrapping around BL2 is tasteless to me.
