I feel that a bit was lost in translation trying to renew the game in this fashion with certain parts that I liked a lot being cut, and some of the characters just not hitting the same.

I also felt like a big impression I got from the game was "Wow the original game really is the shit, huh?".

What's here is no doubt amazing. It is an absolute top-tier game, but trying to remake RE4 was always going to be tough in terms of topping the original. As it stands, I think this version of the game is still excellent, but I think everyone should play the original first in my honest opinion.

The most sheer joy I've had playing a game since... Super Mario Odyssey

It controls perfectly. Even in the moments where I feel its creativity may be a bit overstated, it feels top of the line because of the polish, because of how it feels like each enemy design was thought out, and how I feel like the power-ups and badges (for the most part) actually really do add a lot to the replayability.

I only briefly touched the multiplayer aspect, but as a certified NSMB multiplayer hater due to how chaotic it can get, I actually love the no collision. Still I do think something like the bubble power up could have hilarious multiplayer results and there's a part of me that is maybe a little sad that we missed out on some of that

Banger game. The movement is top notch. I do think this one will be surpassed by whatever comes next in the series because I think there are a lot of lessons to be learned in terms of mission design and in terms of difficulty scaling here. Aside from one mission where I struggled with ammo management with my build, the only difficulty came from end of chapter bosses, which is fine, but the gap in difficulty was really steep between those and the rest of the game in a way that I thought was a little weird, especially for From Software

It's shit. Everyone always says "Oh it's boring but the level design is great!" and I don't see what is great about it. It feels like every single idea is something I've seen before, and every single one of those ideas is done better elsewhere. This is such a nothing experience. There were almost no levels in this game up to where I quit that I thought were enjoyable. The soundtrack is obnoxious to the point that I was getting irritable playing mediocre levels and I had to hear "BAH BAH" over and over again.

I've already come to terms with not wanting to play NSMB or NSMB Wii again because I expect with games like Mario Maker and the oversaturation of the New games that they've likely aged poorly, but this is the 4th game in the New series and you'd expect that they'd have come up with something better than whatever this is.

The only reason I wouldn't score it lower is because it's at least sterile. It's functional at every point. It's just joyless and has literally nothing to add to the series

The highest of highs and the lowest of lows. The pacing is so strange. It's one of those games where it will grow on me as time goes on, as I just think about the great moments in the game and story. It's weird to say I'm disappointed because it's a great game, but honestly I am a little disappointed because I feel like this could have been an all-time great.

Mission quality is a bit up and down in this one, which is the case for pretty much the whole trilogy, but I noticed it especially here compared to 2

It’s still excellent. The levels clearly had a ton of thought and time put into them, and I feel like the story was a bit more engaging in this one, especially as it related to the missions themselves.

I am honestly just super happy they were able to get all the missions from the past games into one big package with this one because as a whole if you played them back to back you have one of the best games I’ve ever played. Tonally, it just works so well to have these goofy moments with the serious story and OST. The presentation is very clean. Everything just works, and I think the game is rewarding to come back to and experiment with, but even if you just okayed it through once, I think you’d probably have a great time because the paths are so well thought out that on your way through a mission, you will at least see SOMETHING cool

I can’t believe the original game came out in 2002

The atmosphere is just completely unmatched. It is about as perfect a translation of a game from 2D to 3D that you could ask for. The progression through the world is so thoughtful. The secrets are great. The bosses are all spectacular

The game is really special, and the dual stick aiming controls with gyro make a huge difference in terms of playing it today. The fact that is all that really needed to be changed to make this game still feel fresh in a genre that has seen so much change 20+ years later is just incredible

Besides the final boss (which is horrible), it's one of the best versions of an early RPG I've played. Obviously the remake spruced a lot up, and then the art got changed in this version, but you can tell there is stuff here that would have been really cool when the original game released

Overall, this version holds up pretty well all things considered

A lot of things to like here, but the leveling system just straight up sucks. You have to be a certain level to attack some enemies, but some enemies also have invulnerabilities making it pretty unclear what sword element can actually be used on what in some cases. The story is pretty alright for an NES game, but I got bored around 5 hours in. Might go back and finish it one day, but the forced grinding to be able to fight some bosses is a major turn-off with how obnoxious sword swapping is.

The dumb Genesis collection on Switch ate my save I guess, so I lost 2 hours of progress and I really don't feel like doing it again, so I'm shelving this for now. It's fine. I like it less than the original. The dungeon design is honestly just worse than the novelty of the first game's first-person dungeons. The HUD is also ugly as sin. It's not terrible for its time, but not exactly a fun one

Has a few levels where you just sit and wonder what the hell they were thinking, but it holds up surprisingly well for all the (relative) Mario 3 slander I've heard over the years

I like it, but they really needed more than one song. The one that plays is pretty irritating. Some puzzles are slightly too obtuse to be enjoyable, and the difficulty scaling of the levels is a bit off

One of those rare games where I don’t know if I’d change anything. It’s so impressive how intricate the map is and how great the bosses are. The animations are gorgeous. Just immaculate

I think the story is just as good as the first game, and the enemy variety is definitely a bit better here. All of the strengths of the first game are still here and in a lot of ways this one is better

Miles is a really likable protagonist and I'm looking forward to having him and Peter interact more in the next game

Banger. So much better than the first game (which I like)
