Uninspiring story, lazy writing, generic environments, and a combat system the bastardizes the soulsborne genre like how Strive bastardized Guilty Gear core mechanics.

Just play Dark Souls.

I was looking forward to this game. And then I made my character and the disappointment set in, establishing pretty much how most of the game would feel from here on out.

You see, for a good while I had wanted to play a CRPG as one of my DND characters, and Skyrim would be the first one. I was really excited to make my character as close to him as possible and was looking forward to choosing a class, as that would rightfully be a defining aspect of my character. I gave him his race, his physical features and, that’s it?Maybe the other stuff would come later. I played through the intro, got out, and no prompt appeared. What about my classes? My star sign? I opened my skill menu and, like a gust of wind from the ocean breeze, the realization of how streamlined this game was began to settle in.

I’ve seen a lot of people say how having no classes and attributes actually gives the player a lot of freedom and it makes me wonder if Skyrim fans are just fucking stupid? Life first of in practice no it doesn’t. You still have to use skills repeatedly in order to level it up. If you wanted real “freedom” you’d increase your skills every time you leveled up like in Fallout, but all you do when you level up is pick to increase one of three bars and pick a perk. Speaking of perks holy fucking shit man. This skill tree perk bs is so fucking ass and ruins a lot of the skills. Just the fucking act of locking perks behind other perks is stupid enough, but it’s especially horrible when the perks arent even remotely connected, or when you need to unlock 3 different things to get the shit you actually want. Speechcraft is probably the best example. I get that leveling up speech in previous games was iffy because of old mechanics, so they put speechcraft and mercantile together, but why the fuck do I need a haggling perk in order to get access to actual speechcraft skills? Why the FUCK is intimidation all the way in the back? Why do I have to get fucking bribery first??? Why the fuck are two-handed and one-handed the skills when blade vs blunt made way more sense? WHERE IS UNARMED????? The underlying mechanics of the character gameplay in Skyrim (skills, perks and the feel of leveling up) are easily the worst aspects of this game. Leveling up feels more like a chore than actually exciting.

Before moving on, let me just say that attributes and classes do not hinder player creativity and freedom at all? In fact it gives the player more freedom and greater things to look forward to, as well as actual incentive to replay the game. In addition, YOU CAN JUST MAKE YOUR OWN FUCKING CLASS STUPID!!!

Moving on to other things that I don’t like about this game. The quests suck. I’m gonna be honest. They don’t really fancy me at all. Oblivion quests actually had soul and charm. Skyrim quests are some of the most basic shit. Even the main questline is so boring. Initially it’s cool cause dragons and you’re the chosen one. And then you realize the “chosen one” narrative is pretty hard to make exciting. Even Morrowind did it better. The final boss fight is so anticlimactic and by that point I was getting kind of tired with the game. You’d think going to the afterlife to fight the so-called “World Eater” would be cool but it genuinely isn’t. Bro does not impress me at all. At least the yellow bitch in Oblivion has a cool ass monologue about his ideology while ur scurrying around. Companion’s was kind of cool but also really short. Not enough character development for me to care. Dawnguard was also kinda meh, but at least I got Serana out of it, and the final boss is actually decent. The only questline I’ve played that I actually enjoyed was the civil war one. It actually felt like I was at war. Whenever I had to capture a point I’d actually have to fight my way through it wasn’t just me fighting like 5 people. Even the final battle was actually cool, though I wish Ulfric was actually powerful.

There are other minor things I hate about this game but I’m fucking tired of complaining like a bitch.

There are still some things to like about this game. Skyrim feels larger than it actually is mostly due to how dense it is, which I find really cool. Oblivion was larger but I will be for real it did feel like empty space sometimes. I also really like how weighty melee actually feels, especially in regards to two-handed weapons. Combat overall does feel a bit more fun than Oblivion, especially with the dual wielding. Oh my god I love the dual wielding so fucking much it actually adds a unique flavor to combat and character building. It is also just actually fun. I haven;t tried the magic dual wielding since my character is pure physical, but I imagine it’s fun too. They also added crossbows to this game. I fucking hate bows and arrows.

My favorite change about this game by far, like this shit actually made me happy as fuck, was the variety of armors in the game. One thing I hated in Oblivion was the linear progression of armor. There weren’t any variants so it would always just feel like a boring, necessary upgrade. A lot of these came from Creation Club stuff which you have to buy separately but it was still really fucking cool to have several options. In addition, with smithing you can improve armor and weapons a shit ton so they can stay forever relevant to increasing challenges. Being able to make your own armor is also cool. I really hope they bring it back to TES 6, both the armor variants and smithing as a skill.

But yeah those are my thoughts. I had fun with the game I can’t lie about that, but overall it was a bit of a disappointment, with sprinkled pleasant surprises along the way.

This is a good asf game!! I haven't played a lot of fps games, much less boomer-shooter types, but if they're all as good as this or better, god damn I cannot wait to play them all!

The enemies are diverse as shit. The levels are diverse as shit. The secrets are diverse as shit (tho some kinda suck in terms of reward but whatever). Even the weapons are diverse as shit. Honestly you'll only need the shotgun for 80% of it but the other guns still have their uses thanks to their secondary ability, which really encourages creativity. The items too are unique as hell and all extremely viable. I didn't use all of them cause I didn't really need to, but god damn alternating between pissing and shooting has never felt better. If you're experience with boomer shooter types I recommend playing on hard (or postal) difficulty so you'll be more likely to use everything at your disposal.

Best part about this game tho? It still FEELS like a Postal Game. Not just another soulless cash grab spinoff looks at FATLUS
