Halo: Combat Evolved is a fun but flawed game that unfortunately shows its age in quite a few ways. This game shines brightest when it shows off its unique and incredible locations, each with their own incredible atmospheres, and ties it all together with its very interesting story. Unfortunately however this game is not always at its best. A good portion of the game is spent navigating tight corridors, often seeing the same rooms copy and pasted over and over again, and fighting the same bunch of enemies. Master chief is fun to control in combat, however a few controls feel a bit outdated or awkward, such as the vehicle controls and lack of a zoom button while shooting. This game also suffers from not really having a proper waypoint system. Despite all of the levels being pretty linear it's still very easy to get lost due to the often confusing and repetitive map design. Overall Halo's biggest problem is its repetitiveness. Whether it be enemies, weapons, or maps, after a certain point you'll start to feel like you're just doing the same thing over and over again. The story is definitely still interesting however and though repetitive it is fun. Despite its rough patches I'm very glad I completed this game and would still recommend checking it out.

Finally got around to playing this. For some reason I played Portal 2 when it came out and just never got around to Portal Sr. Having prior knowledge of how to do the puzzles because of this made Portal 1 quite the breeze to get through and that’s really the only issue that I think it has.

It relies a lot more on environmental storytelling rather than any actual plot progression. It exists more just to set up the small world and act as a bit of a demo slice for its fun portally puzzle physics. The turrets are very silly and GLaDOS carries a lot of the runtime with sarcastic humor that kind of distracts you from how ominous the circumstances surrounding your character actually are.

It’s the kind of puzzle mechanics that itch your brain like giving scritches to your pet cat. Made me feel like I was both overthinking and also not thinking hard enough at the same time in some areas. There was one where I couldn’t figure it out immediately so I tried to loop myself between portals infinitely for fun, just to find out that that was the solution all along. So even while the rooms feel like you’re locked between padded walls, it really gives you just enough to play around with until you’re able to solve the problems. If anything I wished it was a bit longer or that the advanced puzzles were different levels. They’re really just the same maps just with harder obstacles like poop floors and more turrets.

Portal is Portal and Portal is very fun. I would say that Portal 2 is the better game, but that’s mainly because it’s just larger in scale, has co-op, and extends the universe created here. You have to start somewhere though and Portal 1 is the perfect sprout to a beautiful gigantic beanstalk.

someone at remedy thought that the scariest thing in the world was having inanimate objects of various shapes and sizes thrown at you and yknow what more power to 'em

pretty solid little Metroidvania, the gameplay that takes cues from Order of Eclessia works well, gorgeous pixel-art graphics and good enough soundtrack, great exploration that feels rewarding and fun boss encounters, everything that an good Metroidvania needs is right here and fans of the genre will feel right at home.

it's a bit too short though, having played other Metroidvania games I finished this in 4 hours with most of the endings done without breaking much of an sweat, the story was decent enough but difficult to follow, lots of time travelling nothingburgers.

nonetheless an solid game, I am excited for the sequel now, hopefully it comes out this year.

Okay, we are doing fine... oh that's a nice plot... hey it's getting very good... why am i crying...? Ryukishi you really did it huh... WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT???

As you can see i had almost every kind of emotion a human being can feel and i am at the episode 3. I was humiliated, i will destroy you Ryukishi, i will win this game!

DAMN IT WHY IS IT SO FREAKING GOOD???

What did I even want out of Dragons Dogma 2? I began this game with a severe sense of disappointment, frustrated that it wasnt something “more”. But Im glad the game has a much greater sense of itself than I did, unwaveringly retaining its unorthodox core with a much more grand presentation. When I get over myself, I see theres just as much here to love as the first game - I would be ungrateful to not appreciate its weird and rare nature.

My enjoyment of playing games with friends slightly outweighs my dislike of zombies so I guess that's a win.

real good one, wheatie, dropping the Persona 3 review on March 5th.

I don't know where to start this review. This was a complete impulse purchase that took me 8 months to finish through sporadic, on and off sessions, only to finally power through it over the last couple weeks thanks to the release of Persona 3 Reload. Before this, my last experience with anything Persona 3 was my first ever playthrough of FES back in 2019. I definitely remember enjoying it a substantial amount, but something held it back compared to the latter two that I had played before it. Could've been the AI teammates, could've been the admittedly weaker antagonists this game presents, could've just been my lack of expectations going into it! Who knows, but I've grown to appreciate Persona 3 a lot more over time, and this recent playthrough of Portable has done nothing but enhance that appreciation.

So what does P3P do for the original game? You can choose the same old male protagonist, playing the story as though it were base P3, albeit minus the animated cutscenes and modeled dialogue portions, or you can play it the right way opt for the newly added female protagonist, complete with loads more social links and some much prettier colors. I naturally chose the newer of the two, and I will undoubtedly say that it is league's better than base Persona 3. Say what you will about Makoto, I just think Kotone is a way more fun protag. On top of that is her replacements for some of Makoto's worse-off social links, in my opinion, Magician being Junpei instead of Kenji, Moon being Shinjiro instead of Nozomi, and especially Fortune being Ryoji instead of Keisuke. Hell, I didn't even hate Keisuke, but I will happily take more time with Ryoji instead, given just how integral he is to the story and being given the choice to actually talk with him outside of story beats.
I found the two brand new characters to be super interesting as well. Rio a bit less so (and i mean come on girl you can do better than kenji), but Saori taking the new spot of the Hermit link is a deeply saddening (borderline horrifying by the end of it) story that can get really unsettling with the information you're told.

If I haven't gushed enough over the new content, that's because I haven't gotten into the music yet. Persona 3 already had a beautiful soundtrack that accentuated its most emotional points perfectly, and Portable adds just a few more to that list. Some of those few being my favorite tracks in the entire OST, Time and A Way of Life. Some of the most soothing songs to come out of the Persona series, making wandering the area nothing but a pleasant experience.

More than anything, I love the feeling of Persona 3. The cold, depressing feeling that comes with everyone's story. That dreadful feeling that overwhelms you near the end of the game. It knows how to set a tone magnificently, and it all culminates in easily one of the most emotional endings I've ever experienced in any game. By God, I'm pretty sure I got more choked up this second time around than my original FES run.

I think I'm willing to call this my favorite Persona, even despite my Persona 4 nostalgia bias. This game is devastatingly beautiful all the way through.

anyway special fuck yous to a particular guide site by the way, for their fucked up guide on Ryoji's social link being one of the top results and freezing me up just 3 ranks in. yes, i'm still thinking about it. no, the bug that accidentally got me to rank 4 didn't help.

I really really really like Octo Expansion. I think its one of Nintendo's best. So when this came out and it was just pretty good I couldn't help but feel a little dissapointed. Oustide of my incredibly tall expectations this game is pretty great. Story is really solid and the character interactions really make it. I felt decently incentivised to 100% and had fun doing it too. I wish it was a bit harder tho. Took only 3 tries to beat and thats pretty pathetic for a roguelite. Maybe it woulda been best to have 10 more floors or so, a case of padding that I think woulda done the game some good. Anyways, pick this up if youre a freak for splatoon single player content,

honestly one of the most lived in worlds ive ever experienced in a more linear level by level type of game. rlly appreciate how fleshed out and real everything feels and how truly ambitious this is. love how bright the gore in this looks and how often there’s rlly impressive and genuinely beautiful set pieces and levels. rlly casually cruel and oppressive atmosphere which is like rlly special given the fact that the story is never too self serious. just way too hard for me to finish lmao😖

I should have already played all the SOTN RPG-esque Vanias by now, considering how much I liked that particular one. Say what you will about grinding EXP, but adding it to a Metroidvania brings me much joy personally.

I tried playing most of these back around when they came out but I think I was just overwhelmed by how many there were, and the stories just never really grabbed me.

Still can't really say the story is very interesting, there's too many anime-isms , basically any kind of weird stuff without explanations or meh characterization. I'm sure that's just par for the whatever localization, which suffices but isn't much to write home about. Okay, I didn't beat it yet, but I'm not champing at the bit for more story, sorry.

Probably the best aspect to this is collecting monster abilities, albeit I still haven't figured out if it's random or you have to kill a certain amount. Probably somewhere in between. Anyway, GOOD GAME.

Edit: After beating it, my feelings pretty much remained unchanged the entire way through. That's perfectly fine. It's a very good game with a solid formula and decent story. It got pretty challenging at times but grinding a bit could usually solve that. I don't really want to 100% it, but I did get the "good" ending. Looking forward to Dawn of Sorrow.

Final note: there's a classical piece of music that's used here that was also used in Soul Blazer and going through that area feels very odd to me.

Call me Todd Coward the way I decide to use the same decade old engine to make a game that the decade old engine clearly cant handle, and as a result have to cut as many corners as possible to make the biggest space sim trainwreck of all time, completely antithetical to what games we make as a company.

This shit was so embarrassing I marked it as private in my Steam library to prevent anyone from knowing I played this fucking slop.
