Nintendo didn’t know it back in 2001, but Pikmin was meant to be played with a Wii Remote. The Wii versions of 1 and 2 control about as well as you could ask for, but 3 managed to find a way to make both the GamePad and Wii Remote feel about equally satisfying.

I don’t know why it feels so much worse in 4, maybe it’s the fact that the cursor is difficult to control with motion controls but heavily reduced in distance. You can throw and whistle further with motion controls than without, which can actually be a big problem. This is the only thing preventing me from giving Pikmin 4 a 10/10, because the aiming and lock-on mechanics are a frustrating.

However, everything else about the game is nearly perfect. It’s such a well-designed game that eases you into the Pikmin experience (perhaps a little too gently) before giving you freedom unseen in this franchise since 2. You can make the game as easy or hard as you want before the postgame until suddenly the game cranks it up to 11 and I couldn’t be happier about most of it. This game juggles the serene calm collecting of early game Pikmin with the ball-busting difficulty pretty well, even if the game trends slightly too far on the easy side for my taste. It’s an understandable concession to make, especially since the game certainly packs a punch at the end.

I also think an important thing to note is that this game doesn’t allow for experimenting as much with different Pikmin types. You don’t get most Onions for almost the entire game, which is fine for most types, but you can only have three types on the surface at all times, and the only way to do it in caves is to find more types down there.

I really don’t like this mechanic, but the game is designed around it so I don’t really mind. It would have been fun to use more types at once, or to have an Easter Egg of a specific combination of Pikmin 2. Oh well, it’s a minor gripe at worst.

Pikmin 4 is the best Pikmin game, but several choices made it imperfect.

Can’t wait to see what’s gonna be cooked up for Pikmin 5 in 9 years.

Genuinely a pretty cool concept with some great ideas but the game is straight up unfair and nearly impossible to make progress. The AI is downright unfair and the vast majority of multiplayer matches are slow, tedious, and only slightly less unfair. Also certain daily challenges are straight up broken, the balancing is straight up awful. If the game received support and was less aggressively monetized, the game could actually be really cool. PvZ allows for so many ideas and it actually has potential, but it’ll never be realized. Thanks PopCap and EA.

This game is far less interesting on repeat playthroughs, but I have to give credit to the great tension-building gameplay loop that had me on my toes despite knowing how the mechanics work.
