peak survival horror, hardcore or bust! every enemy is super threatening and it’s basically impossible to be 100% safe when encountering an enemy, especially lickers and the big lad. speaking of mr x, easily the best big thing chasing you in the series. you will hear his footsteps from almost everywhere in the police station and have to strategize to solve puzzles and progress without getting punched in the face. always felt pressed for ammo in this game but never soft locked on bosses (pretty sure they give you enough ammo to beat them in the arenas as long as you know what you’re doing and your aim is good). this may or may not be my #1 RE but it’s definitely the greatest accomplishment in survival horror for the series (and the best out of any game I’ve played)

edit: replayed on professional and got the rest of the achievements and game is just as great as I remember. very close with REmake, not sure which I prefer fully. extremely fun shooter while also retaining the classic RE vibe pretty hard. great mercenaries mode!

edit: replayed on Chris hard after my original Jill easy (accidental) playthrough many years ago and this game definitely surpasses the original in every aspect. hard was very punishing and I can see why it’s not available from the get go but it was very fun and always had me worried about my resources. kind of goofy that a shotgun to the head doesn’t always one shot though.

would be drastically lower without the mercenaries, every campaign is embarrassingly bad aside from jake's. the mercenaries and core combat mechanics are so fucking good that I can still rank the game this highly despite the shitshow of a campaign. (no, I don’t care that the story is bad in resident evil, the game sucks)

it's pretty well made but it didn't click with me much, the boss fights and addition of the quick turn are big highlights. what mostly falls flat is the level design which i felt made the game a strange middle point between re1 and re2. the gameplay is as fast as 2 but the progression doesn't feel as quick, yet it's still not as slow horror take notes vibes as 1 due to the design not being as mazey and more akin to 2.

would be higher if anything was remotely threatening after the chainsaw battle or if the game was just less forgiving in general, this has one of the few good stories in the series and i'm really glad it revived the franchise but it's very lacking in terms of actually playing it and i don't think i'd go back to it. (still really enjoyed it though)

peak mid? this was one of the first RE games i played and i already didn't think too highly of it but after playing the original 3 it's super disappointing how much of the original's identity was removed here. still a well made and decent game in its own right though.

very cool free update with basically more variations of hunk mode to master and a really goofy cod zombies style survival mode once you beat those. surviving all 100 zombies is no joke, very fun challenge
