The Subspace Emissary is the story mode present in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. It works like a side-scrolling platformer/beat'em up hybrid, using the same engine used for the usual versus battles. While playing through this mode, players can unlock new characters according to the plot, which happens throughout many familiar places across the Nintendo multiverse (and beyond).
