Almost inarguably the most important title in quiz games, largely responsible for its explosion during the first half of the 90s, Adventure Quiz adds Capcom polish and innovation to the genre, reinterpreting buzzer beater trivia as a board game celebrating the company's already storied history. Other games would quickly one-up this in terms of presentation and complexity outside of the quizzes themselves, but it isn't hard to see why this took off in the way it did: adapting trivia to sugoroku (a very simple, popular board game in Japan) with various spots easing or raising the difficulty, gives a welcome sense of progress and unity to a play session, and the bright colors and personality on display from various Capcom character cameos is incredibly charming, especially compared to slower, pure quiz games that made up the competition at the time.

Of course, as with most games of the genre, loses a lot of its power when played solo--not only does the chaotic urgency of being quicker than another vanish, but the sugoroku aspect devolves into little more than window dressing. Still! Grab a friend (who knows Japanese and an unholy amount of trivia about 80s Japan pop culture) and you'll have a ball!
