The AVP games are ahead of the curve.
One of the FEW experiences you can get which tries to do both a power fantasy and keeping an unsettling atmosphere.
I feel like most horror devs think these concepts are at odds with each other or cannot come up with an IP that strives for that as a goal.
AVP is a great game that defies expectations within it's genre. Though that maybe mostly because the IP gives them that.

I played this because I craved some AVP after watching Prey. I was familiar with Monolith's excellent AVP2 and hoped this would give me more or less the same vibes. Unfortunately the experience was mild.

FRENCH REVIEW - https://lacritiquedumoment.wordpress.com/2022/09/15/aliens-vs-predator-1999/

A dark, intense, atmospheric, and challenging game that does not forgive mistakes. The number of saves is limited, and you can literally die at any second. This is an old-school dynamic action in a well-detailed environment of the Alien and Predator universe.
By default, the game has three campaigns.
For Alien, you play the role of a super-fast alien killing machine that drives over all surfaces as if under speeds. But one or two shots are enough to leave you with only a puddle of acid.
Playing as a human marine, you find yourself in a living horror where every shadow and every rustle can carry a deadly threat. Ammunition is critically lacking, and enemies spawn in endless waves.
Taking on the role of the Predator, you will be able to fully demonstrate to all opponents what the ruthless extermination of all types of super-technological alien weapons is. And the inhuman roar after harvesting the trophies gives an unforgettable feeling of triumph.
The plot is of little importance here. The main role is played by your ability to survive. And it depends only on you - whether you will be a victim or a hunter.
