Apotheorasis: Lab of the Blind Gods

released on May 12, 2022

Apotheorasis is a first person 3D action thriller without any graphics or UI. Navigation, stealth, shooting, interactions ; you play it all by ear (literally). A recent accident has left you blind, unable to speak, and with no memory of your former self. “We are here to help” whispers a voice softly, yet something feels off. In a twisted stroke of luck, your fate is tied to that of a dubious stranger. All you know is that something far more ominous is lurking around every corner you can't see.

I played the prologue version which is free. It's really cool concept and I enjoyed playing it. However prologue was more than enough, I don't think I would finish the full game. I found myself often lost and not being sure what to do, and that brought quite some frustration up. It's a quite unique game, I recommend trying the prologue and if that's something you enjoy go ahead and finish the whole game, but like I already said for me prologue has been enough.

Fascinating concept for a game but I feel that concept (an FPS with no visuals) leaves the devs with not a whole lot of design options. But to their credit, they get pretty much as much as possible out of the concept without overstaying its welcome; I was surprised by how varied the gameplay was throughout.

However, the lack of visuals also leads to a lack of subtle visual clues to guide players. The game flip-flops between overexplaining what you need to do to progress and being extremely opaque; there were lots of sections where I had to learn what to do by trial and error, and I never worked out what I was supposed to do for the final boss and had to skip it.

The voice acting and writing are both mixed. The attempts at overt comedy /really/ didnt land for me but they were few and far between enough not to ruin the experience.

All in all, its not perfect, but it makes for a very unique experience, and I'm glad both that this exists and that I've played it.
