Basted

released on Oct 21, 1994

Two young and lovely bounty huntresses, Ryeza and Anita, live in a village that is continuously attacked by monsters. One day, solving a little monster problem in the nearby forest, they encounter a mysterious masked man, who tells Ryeza she wields the power of the sacred jewel Basted. Soon the two girls join forces with a princess in exile, and work together to restore the throne to its rightful owners, persecuted by the ruthless Empire and its allies. Though Basted may look like an RPG at first sight (medieval setting, top-down world, game progression that alternates between towns and dungeons, etc.), it is in fact primarily an action game. Controlling Ryeza and Anita, the player explores the surroundings, talks to people and participates in battles to advance the story. There are no levels, items, equipment, money system, or other required RPG elements. Most battles occur as dictated by the plot, though some are optional. The battles take place on a separate screen. For most battles, the player is able to choose either Ryeza or Anita. Ryeza can jump, and Anita has a long-ranged fire attack. Regular attacks can be powered-up if executed when the attack power meter is at maximum. Both girls can also charge power to execute devastating special attacks (two unique attacks per girl). They are also able to dash and attack while dashing, inflicting more damage. The game features a large amount of fully voiced anime-style cutscenes to advance the story.

Haven't played but they really called a game Basted, that's amazing

Just felt like playing another random PC Engine game that most probably don't care about or don't know about. Made by the same team who's first game was GS Mikami on the same system (Angel_Arle coping that it'll never get a fan translation) was Basted. I don't know how you say that word. I guess it's similar to the word bastard. So how's the game? It's about what you'd expect when diving in.

Basted is a top down action game. Some sites like to label this as an RPG. No it's not an RPG. Sure you travel through a town but there's no EXP, no random battles, no equipment to put on. You're just going through some locations, fighting enemies at times and enjoying the story.

I will warn people that if you want to try this, I'd recommend using a longplay to help navigate through some locations as this is probably the only part that's language barriered to seeing the credits. If there's any nice thing about them is your run button is great as you zip zoom around locations.

The game's story is something, in fact because it was all in japanese we gotta do the funny and have a signature "Angel_Arle tries to guess what the story is!" So what I think happen was-(note I was actually going to do this bit but I realized it was painfully unfunny that I'm cancelling the bit.) Oddly there were cutscenes that I only saw in the cutscene viewer. One them even showed full blown titty. Was really surprised ngl. This game is also the only game I've seen where a cutscene had weird junk data on the bottom and someone did reassure this does happen on real hardware. If I could understand what they were saying, maybe I would like it but considering how horny it is at times, I kind of doubt it...

Now about the actual battles. You can pick between Ryeza and Anita unless the game forces one. Ryeza uses a sword while Anita uses magic. You must fight enemies or bosses till they are knocked out. If you lose all your health it's game over. Don't worry as you can just restart the battle like nothing happened. You have a power meter that goes up by itself similar to the Mana series. You can also hold attack to charge a special move with both having 2 powerful specials if you let it charge the whole way.

Really the game is just nothing special, it's a shame cause I wanna like it but the game is at best playable. I wouldn't be surprised if others had tried it, would probably rate it lower then me. I don't really blame them though. The battles feel kind of an afterthought at times especially by the 2nd half. You can even press UP UP UP DOWN DOWN DOWN LEFT LEFT RIGHT RIGHT I II I while paused and you skip any battle in the game. Kind of crazy.

The game's cutscene look nice but I'm not big on the awful lip syncing. The designs are not too interesting but not bad either which can't complain I guess. If you're a degenerate then you'll love seeing stuff like Ryeza's ass. The top down overworld sprites are super tiny though and kind of look bad. The battle sprites aren't too better. At least the music is nice though I hate how sometimes entering locations resets the music. A lot of the sound bytes are kind of funny too. The voice acting is also not bad.

Basted is something I guess I shouldn't be too surprised about. It's not a bad game but it's not going to impress a single person in the world. It's probably best not really playing unless you really want to watch the cutscenes. The gameplay just isn't interesting enough to be worth playing. But hey guys even if that's the case, just go do a cheat on the title screen and you can play the most hype thing ever. SLOTS!!! yeah really
