Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon

released on May 23, 2018

“Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon” is packed with the retro charm that made the legendary 2D action games of the 80s so enjoyable. Take control of one of four characters that can be interchanged at any time during gameplay: The sword-swinging exorcist Zangetsu, the whip-wielding heroine Miriam, the magic using alchemist Alfred, and Gebel, who can turn into a bat and take to the skies. Finally, you can experience multiple endings depending on how you interact with the characters you meet. This project is the 8-bit style game promised as a stretch goal of the 2015 Kickstarter campaign for "Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night." Backers of the Kickstarter campaign are encouraged to check the Kickstarter page for updates.

Played on casual; the 30+ minutes it took just to get it running counts as veteran mode, to me.

Pretty fun little Castlevania-like. Leans very heavily on its influences but has enough of its own ideas to be interesting. Heavy alternate path use is fun, even if it's not really interested in letting you find them on your own. The extreme differences between the characters is interesting; appreciate that not-Alucard's attack is basically the classic Dracula three fireball thing.

Started but haven't finished the second loop; will probably go back for it.

It's a decent homage to NES Castlevanias. Played on Veteran until I took a break on the last level, returned and beat last level on Casual.

My first dive into the Bloodstained series, and it's definitely a worthy successor to Castlevania. Inti Creates did an outstanding job with Curse of the Moon. It is a love letter to the classic NES Castlevania games in every way but its name, while still managing to stand out as an amazing game on its own and not feel stuck in the past. Even if you haven't experienced the old-school Castlevania games, you will still likely enjoy this one.

The soundtrack made by Michiru Yamane (legendary Castlevania composer) & Ryusuke Fujioka is music to my ears that elevates this package. The cherry on top is the cool secrets to unlock that made me want to replay the game 2 more times, which does not take long to beat. It helps me not get tired of it. If this winning streak continues with Ritual of the Night and Curse of the Moon 2, I might not miss Castlevania if Konami continues to leave it in the dust.

Outstanding game. Platforming feels great. The level design is interesting and always fresh. The Boss Fights are all memorable. Great OST. Difficulty on point. Interesting story and pacing.
