This game lingered in the back of my mind ever since I'd first played it as a kid, and going back to it now and unlocking everything within no more than two hours, I must have been crazy for letting it fester my memories.

The controls are all but pleasant, your turning is more often than not lacking, and while the drift is still fairly helpful, having little control over it makes it feel not quite right. This proves especially true with karts with the worst handling, in which the handful of U-turns work to your detriment, and you're forced to sluggishly brake as you let the CPUs overtake you. In short, better handling karts objectively outperform the rest.

I appreciate how there's a bit of replay value in the form of four unlockable characters with more diverse stats beyond minmaxxing, but that's where my praises of Cocoto start and end. The track selection is abysmally low with just five tracks, and the fact that the other five unlockable ones are glorified alt routes of each base track is truly appalling. The third and final cup leaves a whole lot to be desired, compiling all ten tracks into a ~20 minute slogfest that doesn't warrant playing unless you're completely committed to this game.

If you're going to mooch off Double Dash's UI, at least have the decency to copy Mario Kart's formula and make driving enjoyable. Check this game out if you really want to relive your era of shovelware games. Otherwise, rev up any other kart racer instead.
