CrimeWave takes place in the fictional futuristic city of Mekeo, plagued by rampant crime and chaos. To combat this crimewave, the corrupt mayor has privatized the city's police force and offers bounties to anyone that takes out a wanted criminal, effectively turning the police into bounty hunters. The player takes the role of a member of the Mekeo Vehicle Police patrolling the city with their heavily armed police car to take out criminals and collect bounty money while simultaneously fighting off rival cops that are out for the same bounties.

Despite having a pretty cool concept, good graphics and a glorious soundtrack, Crimewave ends up falling kind of short, especially due to its poor framerate and dizzying camera movement.

As mayor, what do you do when your futuristic city has fallen down the path of the crime-riddled cyberpunk dystopia? The obvious answer here is to turn your police force into murderous bounty hunters riding cars equipped with machine guns, rocket launchers, mines, and anything else you can think of using on the criminal populace of the city.

In CrimeWave, you control a vehicle in an isometric-ish view. As you patrol each sector of the city, new bounties will appear. You locate the target and destroy them in armed vehicular combat using a wide arsenal of weaponry. Once you make enough Meks off the smaller bounties, a much larger military-grade boss will appear. Survive your encounter, tear them to shreds, and move onto the next district.

The gameplay is simple, but fun. Controls can be difficult due to the angle of the camera, but after a bit of trial and error, you will adjust nicely. Weapon variety is great, and the different districts feel distinct and unique. Mastering the controls is key as this game can be unforgiving with a small number of continues. I only wish you could select your vehicle as you spawn.

Music is fun and diverse. Each new sector brings a new song and a new ride if you lose your last one. I really enjoy the overall aesthetic of the game. The world is cyberpunk in design, but many of the vehicles and buildings resemble different time periods and locations across the world with CrimeWave's own spin on things.

I grew up playing this game quite a bit and remember it fondly. It's one of my go-to selections for my Saturn, and it's a shame that nobody I know has even heard of this game, let alone played it. I had to make this page on IGDB myself for it to even be on the site. Give it a shot if you're feeling gutsy and feel like exploring new avenues in retro gaming.
