Dragon Ball Z: The Legacy of Goku
released on May 14, 2002
Dragon Ball Z: The Legacy of Goku takes you on an incredible journey to protect the universe from the evil Frieza once and for all. The game follows an RPG style, with battle elements designed similarly to the style of the cartoon, with fireballs, quick moves and more. As the story progresses, you will learn more about the history of the cartoon, meeting a collection of crazy characters and fighting one-on-one battles over long distances as well as close combat. The ten hour quest will take you to Master Roshi's Island, throughout Earth and beyond. Plus an in-game clock keeps tabs on your time limit to complete the game.

It’s fascinating how nostalgia can make us overlook problems.
One of the crappiest games I’ve ever played, lack of transitions, cuts at the end (the final boss fight lasts 3 minutes, and they skip Frieza’s final transformation), horrible hitboxes…
But I have a lot of affection for this trilogy; the second one was perhaps my first RPG and is one of my favorite games of all time. Therefore, credit must be given to this first game, as it was the one that created the concept."

It's a given that this game is bad - what's interesting to me is that it exists at the precise cross-section of the graph of time investment and fun.
If it was one centimeter worse, this game would be unplayable to me. If it were 15 minutes longer, I would have dropped it before the end - and it is precisely bad enough to be interesting, but not appalling. The thinnest passing margin of all time. Associate's Degree with a D+ transcript, but a graduate all the same.
Somebody, somewhere, cared when they made this game, as made evident by how good the sequels are.
