I've never actually played an Elevator Action game though I've always been interested, especially with Elevator Action Returns since that one always looked really cool to me. Maybe someday this year I'll get to it. So how is this take on the series like? A good one I'd say.

You have the option to control three characters. They are similar outside of some changes like different movement speeds, starting health, and their jump. I played as Sarah for this playthrough. You'll go through 4 buildings with 4 stages each trying to uncover items from doors marked with ! on them.

You can also find doors with a ? on them which can give you a different item or health. You start off with a normal gun that can shoot 3 bullets. You can get the likes of a shotgun that pierces through any enemies it touches, a faster version of your normal gun, and even some grenades. I personally didn't mind having to use any of them outside of the grenade which I didn't like at all.

The buildings will have their gimmicks like starting with number 3 where there are crumbling floors. Buildings will always have stuff like many useless doors, a chute to go down, escalators, and of course those helpful elevators. You have a couple enemy types to wish you dead at any moment they can. Though due to the small amount it can be a bit repetitive. The game however never really feels boring and never frustrating. It stays rather consistently good.

The game sadly has no bosses as by the end of the 4th stage you'll have to just fight a barrage of enemies that offer no challenge whatsoever. The final part of the game has you fighting an actual guy who for some reason can't be crushed by elevators HE'S CHEATING! But otherwise he is very easy. Once he's down you can use him with the help of a code as he's the best character in the game but yeah you're done.

This game looks decent, it's actually in someways a visual upgrade to the GB Elevator Action game which while similar is not the same game as this. I'm not really sure if I like some of the character art though but that's just me. The music is also very chaotic sounding to me especially the ending like it does not sound normal to me. Though due to the slowdown at times, it makes the music sound rather odd when it slows down too.

Before the review ends I wanna address something. This game did not come out in the US but I have to put an * on that. Because while yes there is no game here called Elevator Action EX here, there was a reskin for it based off an American Cartoon called Dexter's Laboratory. I have no clue why they did this tbh but they did. It's rather lazy from the bit I saw of a longplay. The music seems to be mostly the same, there are still 3 options to play as but are now all just the main character, I don't get it. Even the ending is very similar which I'm guessing due to graphical changes makes the ending look like you ran into a glitchy room. I wonder if any kids were confused by that. Even the credits are gone meaning the code for the character is now integrated for the final cutscene. At least the game itself is good still even if now part of the appeal isn't there for me since I could care less about the IP.

Elevator Action EX is a good game that while not something outstanding is still a good little time waster with not really any downfalls outside of maybe the lack of good bosses and no password/saves. If you ever enjoyed the original Elevator Action then this will satisfy you and it's a nice little addition to the GBC library.
