Fantastic game with lots of paths to take in how you rule and conquer. More or less complete freedom with a dark and mystical tone that makes the world feel super engaging.

Less interesting and unsuccessful game compared to Rome. It gets boring very fast and it's because of the similar gameplay mechanics in Rome. It's not fun to repeat the same thing over and over. Game developers need to understand this. Playing on maps that are too big is not fun when you can't fill it with good enough interesting quests. I'm not patient enough to finish this game, nor does it look that interesting. The game has a terrible camping mechanic. If they had spent as much time developing the main story and gameplay as they did the camp mechanics, we would have had a much better game.

A very nice game about being a Viking and causing trouble in the British isles. There's isn't much of a story, the expedition proper consists on either accumulating power, prosperity or securing an alliance with a foreign power and it's all pretty straightforward and up to the player which I think is great. There's a surprisingly high amount of choices to be made overall, but it's easy to follow. I think the writing is serviceable all-around, although the romanceable tomboyish childhood friend trope is something I tend to relate more to anime than to vikings LOL.
The combat is really good and varied, you can set up a shield wall, be really aggressive with spears and dual wielding, keep enemies at bay with traps and ranged attacks, etc. Once you are comfortable with a particular strategy some encounters can feel repetitive because there is a lot of fighting in this game, most enemies have access to the same stuff as you do and some skills are clearly better than others, but there are some memorable battles along the way as well. Also, you can level up whatever skills you want for every single character, I appreciate that kind of freedom.
I really like the concept of going on a journey, although I believe the game doesn't do enough with the concept. The time you are given is more than enough to beat the campaign and time is the most scarce resource you have so at least I never had to take a decision on the road like you would have to in a dangerous excursion to foreign lands, falling back was always an option.
I have some minor reservations about the game's technical performance, especially the music, sometimes it just goes away for no discernible reason. Apart from that, I really enjoyed Expeditions: Viking.

While it doesn't boast the highest production values, Expeditions: Viking has more than its fair share of enjoyable combat encounters, beautiful locales to explore, and a script that could pass for a season of something like The Last Kingdom.

I recommend it to anyone, new or old, to cRPGs, or just those wanting to play something different than the usual.
