It was the year...whenever Terry was announced for Smash I already forgot. I thought to celebrate this by playing the first Fatal Fury on the SNES and I didn't like it. Maybe I would now but back then I thought it was a bad experience and I couldn't even beat it. So I decided to play the Neo Geo version and it was a better experience.

So I think this one was made by the same person who directed Street Fighter 1. While that game was just awful in many ways, this one improves on it by actually feeling like an actual fighting game should be. Though some things are similar like a limited playable cast and characters only the CPU can use.

Now I will say right now I am bad at fighting games and the only character for some reason I could do the inputs for was Terry so I decided to use him for the game. Yes I know it's a boring choice but I want to actually beat the game. The game is good for it's time when SFII wasn't the standard. I think that game was out by now when this was in Arcade's but they would have been both in development at the same time so I can't be too harsh.

The game itself can be pretty hard, by the time I got to Raiden I was having a really tough time winning and honestly the only reason I even beat the last two opponents was because their AI wasn't that good dealing with grabs. This game also has this weird two layer mechanic where sometimes you'll go to the background to fight. I'm actually not sure if you can do this yourself without them also going to the back because I could never figure it out if you could.

The game looks pretty nice for 1991 and I like the sprite work here. The backgrounds look cool though I swear in Raiden's stage I can see a sign that's the Hardees/Carl's Jr. logo. Like do they even have that in Japan? The music is nice with my favorite theme being Richard Meyer's. The voices are also kind of funny because it doesn't feel like much budget went into them. It's still fun to shout POWER WAAVE! and BURN KNUCKLE!

The game is decent if a little frustrating at times and would begin a series of fighting games for years to come. Will they improve? Well yes because I've already played one of them and it was very good. But I'm not sure about the others and I'll be curious to see how they are. This is still better then the SNES port btw because I could actually beat this one.
