Lock's Quest is a game that builds on you. It takes a while to break ground and get past the tutorial. You are then given very rudimentary materials/mechanics. But the game slowly pushes you to use them in ways other tower defense games are scared of. You need to leave your creation behind to go claim new territory, then build up defenses for both. You need to pick up your base and carry it to a new but less defensible position. By the end of the game the writing has gone from 2/10 to 5/10, you are given hoards of money, and the waves of enemies will consistently put your back to the walls you just built.

I don't feel like I should be as positive about this game as I am. But it was just the simple toy I was looking for after playing a super artsy and emotionally involved game. And it was a pretty dang good toy.

One of the best DS games imo.
Tower defense but you do actually build walls. The mechanics and world building are really nice together and the story has several twists typical of other genres.
NEVER play the PC version, and play on original hardware, otherwise this becomes very boring very fast.

really solid rts/tower defense with some unique mechanics and a brilliant premise. the original ds game is fantastic, but the pc port isn't really worth playing, it's way too broken, sadly.

A pretty good RTS / Tower Defense hybrid with a few shortcomings that prevent it from expressing its full potential. The biggest problem I had was the fact that the game doesn't tell you which type of enemies appear during the next battle phase (except for the new ones), so you may end up building structures and turrets you don't really need. Apart from that the gameplay loop is nice and there's a good variety of maps and mission types. Oh, and the soundtrack is amazing. One of David J. Franco's best works for sure.
