Have you ever played a game that felt remarkably.... evil? Like, halfway through playing you realize that that the morality of your participation in the game is suspect? As if the video game ESRB rating system was completely justified? Can you imagine a game so base, so vile, so filled with disgusting content that it made you shiver every time you boot it up? Have you ever played a game that was so horrendously malicious yet managed to consistently draw you back in?

Well, I have.

I present to you Magical Girl Celesphonia, a game that hit me like thirty colossal trucks going 120mph straight towards my cerebral cortex. I really haven't played too many RPGMaker games, but if the rest of them have the mechanical fidelity of Celesphonia then I have stumbled upon a veritable gold mine. Obviously you won't find astoundingly high production value here, but what you will find is a fascinating game.

An evil game.

I get this unshakable feeling that over in Japan, sensibilities are a little bit skewed from how we approach things here in the West. That being said, this game posits rape in an exceptionally problematic way. It's frankly disgusting. No amount of showers, regardless of thoroughness, can cleanse me of the terrible things in this game. It's vile. And it was essentially enough for me to put down the game and rethink my life. At least until the music started playing.

Seriously, I want to find whoever did all the music for this game and buy them a fancy meal. The first time I opened the overworld map (showing various destinations in town), I was stunned. The absolute groove that hits when that alto sax is going ham is nuts. Then the night variation of the track is much smoother, slower paced, and contemplative.

Then terrible things happen.

The story is fine. Maybe a little bit better than that. I'm sure plenty of people will simply dismiss Amane's struggle to cleanse the town of malicious monstrum in the continuation of her mother's legacy so that they may instead crank their hog until the next completely messed up scene. I threw up a little writing that. But the plot is serviceable. I somewhat wish there had been some kind of dating simulator cooked into the game, as well as a more Persona-styled friendship system. But the latter may be pointless since you are your only party member, and the former may be disregarded in case you want Amane to be as sexually liberated as possible.

I laughed a lot during my initial playthrough, but maybe not in places I was supposed to. After defeating a demi-monstrum (effectively boss battles), they'll stagger back, say something or other about not believing they were defeated by this absurdly powerful magical girl, then they will explode. And the sound effect never fails to make me laugh.

Slay monstrum, convert their souls into upgrade materials, upgrade your weapons and armor, unlock various magical skills and abilities, and just have a grand ol' time as you walk around as a one-woman rpg party. You're almost definitely gonna be overpowered as heck, but at least you're gonna listen to some good jams as you do it. If you'd like a little primer for starting off, I unlocked Close Combat, Healing, and Explosion magic to start off with. Between those three (as well as the spell that allows you to repair your clothing), you'll do just fine.

If any of this interests you and you aren't dismayed by the unbelievably despicable depictions of non-consensual sexual encounters, then you should give this game a try. In fact, the music alone was worth the price of admission for me. But recognize that this game is fundamentally evil by design. And download the 18+ patch if you're willing to engage with the horniest game I have ever encountered in my time (and I played College Kings).

I'll return to this game eventually, trying to find scenes that I missed, rethink opportunities I squandered, and change my starting answers around to see how great an effect on the game they truly have (hypothesis - they hold little influence on the game if any (but I'm willing to be surprised)).

Until then, happy hunting! And for God's sake, please buy as many tissues as possible and set them to auto clean Amane. Her journey is not a clean one.

But the jams are impeccable.

It does corruption pretty well rather than some random protag doing same mundane ero thing for eternity and suddenly she is an ultra prevert

Magical Girl Celesphonia is quite a game, not gonna lie.

The premise is your typical "girl gets turned into a magical girl in order to beat a monster that is going to murder (or in this case, rape) her and eventually sets out to save the world". That works in the games favor to separate the various moments where you play as the Amane, the protagonist, without using her newfound powers, and the moments you suit up and become the heroine Celesphonia, with all of your monster beating skills.
As Amane you go about the city in order to do some odd jobs, visit shops (in order to buy new clothing, items or spend time doing activities that can get some of your stats raised), talk to NPCs and the like. But you also go to school in order to use the game's day and night cycle and raise your reputation (Which I honestly haven't realized yet why would one maintain it in a high level).

You usually turn into Celesphonia on the game's battle maps. As far as rpg combats go in these kinds of RPG Maker games, M.G.C. gives you lots of abilities you can invest time and resources into, making build variety possible, though not really that necessary in order to beat the game in it's normal difficulty (haven't looked into the tougher difficulties but I think it's best to judge a game based on it's default difficulty). Grinding only becomes a necessity when farming for the better items on the list and though I'm not really fond of grinding items (that sometimes have somewhat low drop rates) the fact that game has a "auto-kill-easy-enemies-on-a-backstab" mechanic makes traversing the game so much more enjoyable and interactive than most JRPGs I ever played, even outside RPG Maker games.

The writing for the most part is not that bad, considering it is an ero-rpg. Of course, given that for the most part the main non ero content isn't what you go for when playing these games, it served as a passable anime story about a girl fighting monsters.

NSFW Stuff -

On the topic of the ero content, it honestly ain't half bad, though it uses mostly stills of the character on the unlockable scenes, the integration between some of the game's in battle mechanics with the ero content is really interesting and makes it an enjoyable experience. The sound design could use some more work. Amane as pretty much one sound file dedicated to her orgasms, and you better like it because god, you're hearing that one a lot. Sometimes I just wished there were more characters envolved in the H-Scenes that made any sound at all because that surely is somewhat tedious, specially if you go for a lot of the scenes you didn't get before on the final part of the game. Some of the other characters don't even have sounds dedicated to them which means the game uses only sounds for the intercourse without any moans happening which is honestly disappointing.

On a apreciative note, this game does it's corruption very nicely and I know the studio does this a lot, but I couldn't for the life of me say that it doesn't work. As a steam reviewer has said, this game makes you feel really bad about the things you put the character through, and though it's the nature of the game to make very risqué choices for H-Scenes, the whole journey of getting your character from inexperienced to sex addicted really does get one hooked and it's a highlight of the game.

One may take a look at the rating I'm proposing for this game and think I may have disliked it but honestly I loved every second of this game, and the rating is reflective of that. It's bad parts mostly come from uninteresting monster and encounter designs on the battlemaps that usually plague most RPG Maker games, but honestly this probably the biggest rating I could ever give to a game like this, and that should be something to consider it favorably.

If you enjoy a slow burn, this game sure may be to your liking. I fully recommend it.

Magical Girl Celesphonia is definetely one of the best Ero-RPGs I played in quite a while.

Why would I play this mediocre JRPG ineffectively to get the sex scenes for anonymous characters doing meaningless barely differentiated non con scenes when there are thousands of free more artistically challenging and erotically compelling works created by trans dykes in the midst of a K binge every day online

A very fun RPGMaker game. One of the few that kept me beyond the first few hours. There is alot of freedom which is seldom seen in RPGMaker games and makes the journey alot more personal and different to each person.

It's not a bad RPG, kinda simple but it's not bad on the slightest. My only problem with it is that it's that its mechanics are kinda obscure, specially the smut ones. F95zone has some guides still( https://f95zone.to/threads/magical-girl-celesphonia-v1-06-shimobashira-workshop-kagura-games.116302/page-51#post-8126490). Being fair, it looks like one of the best of the genre.
