Moto Roader is a futuristic racing game that allows up to five players to compete against each other. Players use the cash earned when they win a race to power up their machine. Not only can they change the "tire" and "body" of their vehicles, but they also can add "special" parts. Jump over tall obstacles with a "hopper" and blast past rivals at incredible speeds with "nitro." What multiplayer game would be complete without attack items? Use a forward-launching "grenade" or a backward-dropping "bomber" to blow up and knock away rivals. Outmaneuver rivals in all eight heats to become the champion.

A simplistic and outdated top down racer by 1989 standards.

Honestly I was wanting to do an in depth review for this game but I just could barely do one cup of this. I’m sorry folks, I’ll still review the rest of the trilogy in due time but this was not it for me.We have another Masaya game and this one was pretty early into the PC Engine’s life so let me talk about it.

It’s a racing game where you drive with four other racers, CPU or Human and race 1-3 laps depending on the track. You can also customize your name and change parts of your car with the money you have available. The driving itself is weird, I don’t play many top down racing games but sometimes you just have to hold up or down to turn and it feels very unintuitive. Tracks are of similar quality with different layouts to them and there’s eight in one cup. Oddly the cup choices are done via inputs before pressing start instead of just being on a menu.

Now this game has two massive issues. One is the fact this game was clearly designed with real people in mind. You all have to be on the screen together meaning if you get behind, the game teleports you to the middle of the screen. Now this will cost you gas and having none is a game over but in the first race, you can do this at the last second and go from last place to 2nd. It also means it’s hard to have any meaningful lead as one mistake will spell your doom. It also just feels impossible to get a good lead if someone has better stats than you, it’s why the first race is so hard. There’s also the problem that if you have the lead then you’re so close to the edge of the screen that it makes it hard to react to most things. You better hope you have good steering. Seriously could they not zoom it out just a bit more, warnings can only do so much and they don’t even do it all of the time.

The game graphically looks good for the time but it can look pretty bland. The speed showing each course is pretty cool however. It’s nothing outstanding but good. The music is also not bad which is shocking cause I’m used to not being a big fan of PC Engine music. There’s not too much to hate here.

It’s unfortunate I didn’t like the game. I was going to do every cup but I just couldn’t bring myself to do it. If it wasn’t for an oomf helping me, I probably would have lost it mentally and did it anyway. Hopefully one day someone else can review this game and give it a better viewpoint because as for me, I can only hope the sequel is better.
