STILL needs more factions (I know they added one but it was too little too late and honestly isn't that different at all) I wonder if theres an inherent flaw to spherical geometry in RTS games because a lot of matches of this feel identical as you really have to surround your base with defenses 360°.

What I wished starcraft was

YEAH BABY THIS IS WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT

indie GEM right here.
RTS games for me PEAK when they have SCALE. My highest hour game on steam is "Dawn of War: Soulstorm" because I've played that game with the "Apocalypse" and "Crucible" mods which, you guessed it, add MASSIVE scale.

This game has it in spades. It's got an old school RTS gameplay loops of get resoursce, mass produce unit, rinse and repeat. And it does it well. Automating systems in this game is far simpler than it is in any other RTS i've played. Im a bit thick in the head, and i struggle with intense systems (stupid for someone who loves RTS games i know) but this game lays it all out so thoroughly and straightforward that even a simpleton like me can grasp it.

I also absolutely love base building and by GOD do you build BASES in this motherfucker. MASSIVE defenses, artillery, torpedoes, space lasers, anti-space lasers, anti-anti-space lasers, nukes, TITANS, fuckin planet destroying super heaters, more artillery, i love this shit.

This game is a decent RTS. For sure worth the money on sale but sadly it still falls short in key areas. Most large scale RTS's like this have issues with scale where there is not a ton of consistency as to what a "good" scale is. It seems like the ideal map size is 2 planets with 1 moon or large asteroid. But most of the time factions end up killing eachother before anything really cool happens.

The pro to this is that the game has really good combat and base building with charming graphics. The con is that a lot of the selling points are rare if not nearly impossible to see without manufacturing a scenario for them. The AI is competent and fun to play against but with the pace of the combat I have not personally seen "planet killers" being used without doing it myself or ignoring the AI completely.

I think the game's concept is very creative and the gameplay is polished and easy to pick up, but the "different" factions lack personality and all of them share the same units. There's no story to speak of either. As a result, I personally find it hard to get attached to this game.
Overall I'd still recommend Planetary Annihilation if you can get it for cheap because of the novelty value.
