Pokémon Clover

released on Apr 10, 2020

Pokémon Clover is a ROM Hack of Pokémon Fire Red featuring the two brand new regions of Fochun and the Ebin Isles, as well as 386 original fakemon! Started in late 2014 as a janky rehash of Pokémon Fire Red, Pokémon Clover has since evolved into a complete overhaul with all-new characters, story, maps, music and gameplay mechanics. The main point of Clover is to be both a parody of 4chan’s imageboard culture as well as a parody of Pokémon as a whole. It thus contains themes and language not suited for the faint of heart. The current version of Clover has been in the works for over 4 whole years with effort worth thousands of hours by over 40 contributors, and with an estimated play time of over 100 hours, Clover is sure to bring you moments filled with joy, frustration, laughter and suffering!

I mean if you ignore the crazy levels of racism, homophobia, and even more phobias, its pretty good.

This romhack has some features and overall region direction that would put it in the upper tier of Pokemon romhacks ever if it wasn't the most reddit fucking thing on the planet. Like, even during early stages of this romhack's development, the humor felt decrepit. It isn't even a thing I can suggest you play through and just ignore the unfunny parts, because so much of this game's design is baked into "isn't rickrolling someone funny?"

People have complained that it's offensive and in bad taste, and they're right to do so. I also like Deadly Premonition 2, and that game makes JK Rowling look like Leslie Feinberg. If it's funny, I'll bite. None of the jokes in this humorous romhack land. There isn't a "Oh, if they just went back to the drawing board, this might not have been a total shitshow", because that would imply a 2016 /vp/ could come up with a better bit than "what if we replaced the gym leader's battle theme with sandstorm". So much collective effort and time went into a project that probably never stood a chance.

What an amazing game. The Clover devs have taken the design philosophy of classic Pokemon and refined it into a masterpiece. This is genuinely the best Pokemon game ever made, hidden behind a veneer of memes and 4chan shitposts.

A lot of really good mechanics and a sense of humor that I'd sometimes call great, but the offensive Pokemon were very pointless and will be a massive turnoff for most people. The endgame is a bit much too. I don't know why you should need to EV train your Pokemon for a game you're going to be done with soon anyways...

Not backloggd approved 👎👎👎👎👎 play real games like Metal Gear Solid 2, Persona 3, or Nier Automata.

One of the best Pokemon games I've played despite being fanmade. The sprite work for all of the designs is consistently well done and hilarious, and all of the Pokemon are designed to have at least decent stats and move pools. The routes are true gauntlets full of plenty of trainers to keep your team in shape. The added quality-of-life improvements, such as the EXP share and revisions to HMs, all make the game feel very fair, despite its steep difficulty curve. It will test you in a way no official game does, but it is completely doable and well worth the time.
