The lack of stage variety and the AI being terrible at its own game may be the most glaring flaws of the game, but I'd also argue that they screwed up the balance of the original game in a good way. Running is such a viable option in the platforming events that you are no longer forced to have to fight your way to first place, and throwing someone off the stage no longer being an instant death in the combat event makes it far less tense.
