In this installment of the Serious Sam series, Sam takes on a new arch-nemesis "Mini Sam", an evil clone of the hero Sam "Serious" Stone. Mini Sam has taken control of the timelock and is going through time wiping out ancient civilizations - and it is up to Serious Sam to put a stop to him. The game takes the player through over 40 levels in three historic locations; Ancient Rome, Feudal China and Legendary Atlantis. The PS2 version includes online multiplayer support for up to 8 players via the broadband adapter and two players on one PS2, while the GC version allows 4 players to battle it out on one GameCube. Competitive multiplayer modes include Deathmatch, Hold the Flag and Pass the Bomb. The entire single player campaign can be played through co-operatively, allowing two players to help each other take on the vicious armies of Mental and Mini-Sam.

Serious Sam: Next Encounter is a relentless, bombastic first-person shooter that throws you into massive arenas filled with absurd enemies. It focuses on pure old-school arcade action, pitting you against hordes of bizarre creatures while blasting away with an arsenal of over-the-top weapons. While its graphics might feel dated and the gameplay can be repetitive, Serious Sam: Next Encounter delivers a satisfying dose of mindless, chaotic fun best enjoyed in short bursts.

So I finished the GameCube version of Serious Sam The Next Encounter. It was developed by another studio and was a console spin-off. It feels like a bridge between Second Encounter and Serious Sam 2 in a way of presentation and stuff. And I love SS2 so I guess I like this too.

It had different environments both in terms of locations (Rome, China, Atlantis, and final Sirius mothership) with different gimmicks and some enemy types unique to zones.

The rampage mechanic was a bit annoying tbh with sound effects and music change if you did 20 kills in a combo. Same as this occasional Humvee transport was sort of undercooked - SS2 did transport much better.

Some places looked low detailed, mostly some arenas and open spaces which is fine I guess for a GC game that also had a PS2 port. But Some interiors and locations in dynamic looked nice actually.

The game was tedious at times like all arena shooters, but in general, I more enjoyed it than not.

Some Enemies+interior+location combinations reminded me about another Serious Sam clone "Will Rock" - but Will Rock was... bleh to say the least.

Not as "obscure" as it once was, but for a long time Ive held the opinion that TNE is an unironic hidden gem of the PS2/GC library.

Haters wanna hate, this is the best Serious Sam game. 👌
