Speed Racer

released on Dec 31, 1996

Speed Racer is an arcade type game that resembles the Sega Saturn's Daytona USA. The first track is identical, except for the lack of a pit lane, the Sonic sculpture in a wall and the different sponsor banners. The major difference between the two games is the performance of the car and the fact that the player can use all the gadgets of the anime Mach 5. The gadgets can be used to "shunt" other cars (even with the Cutter, the cars only bounce and there is no damage in the game), take shortcuts (by cutting trees and passing under lakes), etc. The controls are simple and the player switches over the gadgets and the camera views. The player can choose the length of the race in the menu, along basic sound options.

When you finish a race the announcer says "your ranking is shown"
When you crash the announcer says "wake up!"
It rocks
Reminds me of air combat
Why is there a game over screen after every race before the ranking screen lol

Way too little content
1 track that's divided in 3, 3 modes that play the same
And you only need to play the time attack once to unlock everything
First race is piss
Second and third are piss if you use either shortcut near the gas station. I reverse engineered the better shortcut by going from its exit to its entrance, it's very simple to find. Even if you mess that one up, you can use the other one as a backup strat and still get far ahead. Allows you to drive terribly and still win on normal.

The braking is really funny
The jumping is really funny too, I was able to keep all momentum while crashing midair consistently on this bit in a shortcut
Shame this doesn't have analog control
You can't reverse, only brake

I like how out of the 7 gadgets, only 2 can be useful in normal contexts, 2 can only be used together (enabling one auto-enables the other), those and 1 more are only useful in shortcuts and 2 are, as far as I can tell, completely useless. The gamefaqs guide also doesn't know what they're supposed to do lol
Edit: apparently one of them increases nighttime draw distance

I like the day and night cycle. It's like the thing on rereleases of Sonic R but it changes mid-race

I don't regret playing this but eh
A bit charming, in the early 3d way
Nice soundtrack
