The "evolution" upgrade system carries over from the first game in a similar form. It just doesn't do enough to improve on the somewhat clunky shooting.

Some of the most depraved balancing in an arcade game. Ever. The evolution mechanic and collecting DNA to get a better shot upon death is honestly really cool, but it's executed so awfully in which getting hit by a SINGLE BULLET slowly reverts your ship to a peashooter, unable to fire until the animation is completed. Sure the latter weapons are very powerful, but your ground bombs are always the same, and have an extremely tiny hit box. There is also a speedup and shield pickup which protects with from a single hit, but they rarely appear the the pickups themselves are difficult to grab. They move in a circle away from you once, then quickly goes up and off-screen. You can also pick up an egg that turns into an immortal copy of your ship when given power-ups, but it only shoots sideways, and can never have a more powerful shot than you, which means that losing all your shot power from a single hit also turns the helper into a peashooter as well.

Enemies are extremely mean mid to late game too. The bullets they fire become very fast to near-impossible to dodge. And as an extra punch to your face, there's ground enemies that can shoot either bullets that blend in with the background and/or move super fast. And the enemies that fire the former are also difficult to see. Bosses range from rather easy to actually impossible to avoid getting hit. Did I also mention your shot power decreases if you don't pick up a power-up after some time?

I could go on for way more about how dogshit this rather obscure arcade shooter is, but I feel I've said enough. Just DO NOT play this game. Specifically the Arcade version. I don't know if the Genesis/Mega Drive version makes improvements to the game, but I don't wanna find out.
