A flawed masterpiece.

UFO: Aftermath paints a tomorrow in which humanity is almost snuffed out. From the ashes of a devastating attack on earth you're tasked with

Coming off the heels of reading All Tomorrows by C. M. Kosemen (Highly recommended!) this was a perfect game to whet that appetite - both deal with similar methods of speculative evolution and gene manipulation; I certainly enjoyed the themes of humanity dancing on the edge of oblivion more so than I had before.

The gameplay really flows quite well, at some points really highlighting the absolute chaos of combat in tightened alien corridors; and that leads me into the game's flaws.
Some of the spawn points are quite punishing, sometimes you are surrounded by enemies; but one could argue the aliens would be expecting you anyway. Gameplay wise however this can be somewhat frustrating; especially
if the aliens have access to A.O.E weapons.

The base building is also absent, in lieu of "bases" you capture to gain additional benefits; honestly this didn't bother me too much; The base building was never a highlight of XCOM for me.

This is definitely a hidden gem in the genre and highly recommended if you enjoy XCOM!
