WeaponLord

released on Sep 01, 1995

A barbarian battleground. Seven different warriors, eached armed with a unique weapon set forth on a fighting game quest where they will clash and conflict with one another in this fighting game from Namco. Their ultimate foe is the mysterious Demonlord. An early relative of the popular Soul Calibur series, the main claim to fame of this game is the weapon play. Blocking and combos are present along with special "frenzies" of increased attack and death combos. The backgrounds are all hand drawn and meticulously detailed. Each character carries their own storyline with them between arenas, jungles and firey mountains on a quest to oppose the Demonlord. Note: Laid the groundwork for Soul Edge (1995)--the first of the Souls games. Visual Concepts (developers of WeaponLord) would send builds of the game to Namco (the publisher of WeaponLord) to playtest. Inturn, Mace: The Dark Age (1997 arcade)--developed by Atari--heavily "borrowed" from Soul Edge.

Visually kinda cool and I like the gritty fantasy look but it plays like balls and doesn’t really have enough flair to back it up.

Playing Through My Evercade Collection Part 6: Namco vol 2

I honestly have a problem reviewing this. As a single player fighting game, its not very good, the graphics are messy, the controls are awkward and the whole thing is a bit of a to-do.

Heres the thing though. Im playing this on an evercade so I cant even try it multiplayer as the Namco carts dont work on the VS console. Honestly given how clumsy the game is, thats probably a blessing in disguise but I do have to question why this game of all games was picked when they knew full well multiplayer was off the table.

Very bold of Namco to marry this game's primitive, grim Conan the Barbarian aesthetic with a control scheme that's from fucking Mars

I followed the development of this game across multiple issues of GamePro, and was so hot & heavy to play it when it came out. I loved how it reconceptualized the typical fighting game controller design. Of course, everyone else who played it was all "Why isn't this like Street Fighter/Mortal Kombat/Samurai Showdown?" so I never found anyone else to play it with. Oh well. I still love everything about it.
